A method of and apparatus for assembling an aircraft wheel or brake (10) component on an axle (26) of an undercarriage in which a holder (12) is provided for the component along with a lifting device (28). The lifting device is used to lift the holder with the component therein to a position where the component is substantially in axial alignment with the axle. Once in that position, assembly of the component on the axle can take place by moving the component axially on to the axle. The holder can then be lowered away from the assembled component.

Preferably, similar suction means are further provided at the outlet end of a feed channel (15) for feeding the corks, which brings the corks to a loading station (C). A transfer wheel (13) with a vertical axis transfers the corks (T) in succession from the loading station (C) to the starting station (A) of the corking apparatus, where the corks are received within the respective vice-like devices (8).

A method is described for making a reinforcing wire frame for embedding in a moulded polymer support frame (10) over which woven wire cloth (158,159) is to be stretched and secured to form a sifting screen. The method involves locating lengths of cut wire (50) substantially equally spaced apart in a jig to form a first array. A second array of lengths of cut wire (56,60) is located over the first array with the lengths of wire in the second array being substantially at right angles to those of the first array. The lengths of wire in the first and second arrays are resistance welded at points of mutual intersection so as to form a first substantially rectilinear matrix. Lengths of cut wire (48) are located in a jig to form a third array, in which the lengths are also substantially equally spaced apart, and a fourth array of lengths of cut wire (54,58,62,64) is arranged over the third array with the lengths of the fourth array substantially at right angles to the lengths of wire of the third array, and the wires of the third and fourth arrays are also resistance welded at points of mutual intersection to form a second substantially rectilinear matrix. Protruding lengths of wire on at least two sides of the four sides of one of the rectilinear matrices are bent using a press so as to bend each protruding length first in a generally upward sense and then at a point nearer its end in a generally downward sense so that an end region of each protruding length extends parallel to a plane of the matrix but is displaced therefrom. Thereafter the displaced ends of the protruding lengths of wire of one matrix are resistance welded to protruding lengths of wire of the other matrix, to form the frame.

Durch Verzicht auf starre Trägersysteme mit geometriebestimmten Vorrichtungen wird damit der Aufwand für die Anlagentechnik verringert und ein flexibles Spannen von Werkstücken unterschiedlicher Form und Größe erreicht.

The invention relates to a reaming tool for reaming out several axially interspaced borings (14) of a workpiece (12). The reaming tool comprises a guide shank (16) which can be clamped into a machine spindle and which can be supported in prepared borings (14) of the workpiece (12) to be machined using external supporting elements (18). The reaming tool also comprises a reaming head (26) which coaxially connects on the front end thereof. In order to be able to easily change a worn tool, the invention provides that the reaming head (26) can be connected to the guide shank (16) by means of an auto-centering clamping mechanism (30), and that the supporting elements (18) positioned in the proximity of the clamping mechanism (30) can, during a clamping process, be radially spread in an at least partial manner from a dimension smaller than that of the diameter to a predetermined diameter guide dimension.

This invention provides a method of producing an aircraft assembly tool for supporting an aircraft component comprising: a) determining a plurality of predetermined positions and orientations in space at which the component should be supported; b) designing a fixture frame (12) configured to provide support at predetermined locations of the frame associated with said predetermined positions; c) constructing the fixture frame by selecting elongate members (14) having predetermined lengths and connecting the elongate members together by means of releasable fastening means (32); d) constructing a plurality of pick-up devices (20), each having a receiving element (76) for carrying the component, by selecting further elongate members (66) having predetermined lengths and connecting the further elongate members together by means of clamping elements (68) adapted selectively to allow at least three degrees of freedom of movement of each receiving element along at least two orthogonal axes and around at least one axis coplanar with the orthogonal axes; e) mounting the pick-up devices to the fixture frame at the predetermined locations; and f) moving each receiving element about/around the orthogonal axes to align the receiving element with a respective predetermined position and orientation. The invention further provides an aircraft assembly tool resulting from such a method.
