Microplates and methods for manufacturing microplates. The microplate is designed to allow UV radiation to pass through the bottom wells of the microplate so that the microplate can be used for assaying samples by use of UV absorbance. In one embodiment, the microplate comprises at least first and second wells, each well having a UV permeable bottom. In another embodiment, the microplate comprises a frame having an upper portion and a lower portion contiguous with the upper portion and a sheet disposed between the upper portion and the lower portion and defining the bottom of at least one well of the microplate. One embodiment of the method includes steps of inserting a sheet of UV permeable material into a mold cavity that includes sections shaped to form the sidewalls of the plurality of wells, injecting molten plastic material into the mold cavity, and cooling the plastic material to form the microplate with the plastic material forming the sidewalls of each of the first and second wells and the sheet of UV permeable material forming the bottom of each of the first and second wells. Another embodiment of the method includes providing an upper plate defining sidewalls of at least one well, adhering an intermediate layer to the upper plate and adhering a sheet of UV permeable material to the intermediate layer. A further embodiment of the method includes inserting a sheet of material having at least one hole into a mold cavity, injecting a molten plastic material into the mold cavity and cooling the plastic material to form a microplate.

This invention is a flying disc (132) having a disc body of thermoplastic injection molded material, and a laminate layer (10) integrally joined to the disc body and forming the exterior of the disc. The laminate layer (10) includes an outer clear lamina (12), an inner white and opaque lamina (14), and imaging material (16) sandwiched between the lamina. A groove (126) extending about a rim portion (78) in the disc bounds an edge in the laminate layer. The disc is formed by the method of positioning the laminate layer (10) between two cooperating mold pieces (40, 42) and injecting hot molten thermoplastic into the mold cavity and against the inner layer of the laminar, bonding the laminar onto the disc.

A molded air bag cover (10) for vehicle supplemental occupant restraint systems includes a resinous plastic top wall (32) having a leather or other covering layer (40) bonded thereto and a securing member (30) for attaching the cover to the vehicle. A frangible tear pattern (46) in the covered top wall allows separation for air bag deployment. The tear pattern has a reduced thickness provided by an indented tear seam (52) in the leather or other covering inner surface and an aligned groove (54) in the resinous top wall. A method for making air bag covers includes enclosing leather or other covering material in a mold, advancing a projection on a mold portion against the covering material to form a tear seam, and injecting moldable material behind the covering material to form a backing layer bonded to the material while forming an aligned groove. A desired pattern in the leather or covering material may be embossed in the mold cavity.
