Strapped open magnetic structure, particularly useful in nuclear magnetic resonance imaging applications, which provides a substantially uniform magnetic field within a region of interest while allowing access by a surgeon to a patient via an opening (39) at the top of the magnetic structure. The magnetic structure comprises nested inner and outer magnetic structures separated by ferromagnetic material or pole pieces and surrounded by a ferromagnetic yoke (38). The structure contains one or more thin layers or straps (36) of high magnetic permeability material aligned substantially along equipotential surface(s) of an associated closed magnetic structure of ideal properties. Structures and techniques are also provided for replacing thick, heavy blocks of ferromagnetic material with thin straps and for extending the magnetostatic potential of a component in a magnetic structure by connecting a thin strap thereto and embedding the strap in the magnetic structure along an equipotential surface of the magnetic field generated by the magnetic structure.

An exit bar (10) for securing a door has a housing adapted for mounting to a door. A push pad (30) for receiving a push force is mounted to the housing. A latch (20) extends from the housing to releasably latch the door to which the exit bar is mounted. A link system (32, 32b, 34, 36, 38, 40-42, 44, 46, 48, 50-52, 54, 56 and 58) links the push pad to the latch so that a push force exerted on the push pad releases the latch. An electromagnetic lock disposed in the housing locks the link system to prevent releasing of the latch. The electromagnetic lock employs an electromagnet (64) and a movable armature (70) to lock the link system. The exit bar further delays unlocking the link system for a preestablished delay time after the push pad has been pushed.

The cryostat (10) also prevents the formation of closed loop stray currents on its outer case. The cryostat contains the winding sets (30) and other related electrical equipment of 3-phase electrical transformer as tap changer (28) and electrical leads (29). The cryostat with lid (14) generally comprises a heat insulated cryogenic tank having an outer wall (18), electrically non-conducting liner (22), and load bearing thermal insulation layer (20) disposed therebetween. The tank holds liquid or gaseous cryogenic coolant (34) into which transformer components are immersed, thereby reducing electrical resistance losses or wire losses and magnetic hysteresis losses or core losses. A plurality of passages allow the passage of the limbs or legs (36) from iron core (32) of the transformer through the cryogenic tank.

The present invention is a two or more-piece cascading armature for use in a solenoid. The cascading armature comprises a core (174) of conductive material slidably disposed within at least one conductive sleeve (176), which, in turn, is disposed in the solenoid housing. The core and sleeve are operably linked. In various embodiments, the cascading armature may contain multiple conductive sleeves in varying sizes and proportions to the core. When the cascading armature is installed in the conductive housing, both the sleeve rim (179) and the core face (172) are presented to the pole member face across the working air gap. In the deactivated position the working air gap is different for the core and the sleeve because the rim of the sleeve extends beyond the core and is accordingly closer to the pole member face than the core.

Each mounting member (100) has a plunger (140) which positions the yoke with respect to the funnel portion of the cathode ray tube (130). A continuously unidirectional restricting means (160) prevents the plunger (140) from withdrawing from the funnel portion of the cathode ray tube (130). A release cylinder (170), which is coaxial with the sleeve (140) and plunger (150), releases the unidirectional means, which may be an internally toothed washer (160), in order to provide capability for readjustment.
