A coating composition comprising the reaction product of a benzotriazole compound having a polymerizable vinyl group and a hydroxyl group with a silane compound and/or a (partial) hydrolyzate thereof is applied to plastic substrates, typically polycarbonate resin substrates to form transparent coatings having improved mar, weather and chemical resistance.

A primer composition showing good adhesion to the surface of a substrate, such as a glass substrate, and excellent in weather resistance and water resistance as well as a method of effecting adhesion is provided. The primer composition is characterized by comprising a saturated hydrocarbon polymer having at least one silicon-containing group which has hydroxyl or hydrolyzable group bound to the silicon atom and capable of crosslinking under formation of a siloxane bond.

The invention provides a water-based coating composition in two pack form comprising: i) in a first pack a substantially non-aqueous solution of a silicon-containing polymer which is soluble in water miscible organic solvents and essentially soluble in aqueous media, the silicon groups on the polymer being of formula (1): -SiR1aR3-a in which a is 0 to 2, R1 is Cl-6 alkyl and R is OH or a hydrolysable group, and ii) in a second pack a polymer in dispersion in an aqueous liquid carrier for the composition, where the non-volatile binder solids content of the composition is at least 5 % by weight and the molar concentration of silicon in the composition is greater than 0 and less than 0.5.

The invention relates to a water-swellable resin coating composition which comprises a resin having hydrolyzable silyl groups and a water-insoluble water-absorbing polymer; and also to a water-excluding material comprising a water-swellable resin coating formed on a backing material such as nonwoven fabric. A layer of this water-swellable resin coating composition coated on paper or like backing material (and dried after coating, if necessary), can absorb water at a very high speed and in large quantity. In addition, the resin composition has good coatability on the backing material. Thus, the water-swellable resin coating composition is useful as water-absorbing paint. The water-excluding material according to the invention has high water absorbing speed and capacity, as well as good adhesion to the backing material, and optical fiber cables or electric cables using this material are excellent in their water-excluding capacity.

Benzylpyridinium or benzylammonium salts of a benzenesulfonate anion are useful as a proton-donating curing catalyst in a resinous system capable of curing in the presence of such a catalyst. The catalyst is characterized by its heat-latent nature and thus does not impair the storage stability of the resinous system at an amibient temperature.

The present invention aims to develop an aqueous heat-shielding coating material to which low staining properties are imparted to suppress a reduction in heat-shielding properties due to the reduction in solar reflectance caused by adhesion of contaminants in the air during outdoor exposure, thereby maintaining the heat-shielding properties for a long period of time. The above problem is solved by providing a resin composition for an aqueous coating material including: (A1) a water-soluble and/or water-dispersible resin; (A2) a heat-shielding pigment; (B1) an organosilicate and/or a modified product of the organosilicate; and (B2) a curing catalyst that promotes a hydrolysis/condensation reaction of an alkoxysilyl group.
