Compositions suitable for forming marine anti-fouling surface coatings comprise a polymer (e.g. maleinised polybutadiene) capable of cross-linking with amines, a hydrocarbyl polyisocyanate and a hydrocarbyl tin oxide or sulphide. The composition is preferably in two packs, which are combined on the surface to be coated, one pack containing the polymer and tin oxide or sulphide, and the other the polyisocyanate. A (thio) carbamate is formed as an intermediate which then hydolyses to an amine. A method of coating surfaces and surface coatings so produced are also claimed.

A motor spirit blending component is prepared by reacting a hydrocarbon feedstock containing isobutene and reactive tertiary olefins of higher carbon number and having a final boiling point of at least 150°C with a lower aliphatic alcohol. The reaction is carried out in the presence of an etherification catalyst under a temperature in the range 30° to 200°C, a pressure in the range atmospheric to 100 bar, a liquid hourly space velocity in the range 0.1 to 20 vol/vol/hour and a molar ratio of alcohol to reactive C 4 -C 7 tertiary olefins in the range 0.1:1 to 10:1. The product contains a mixture of tertiary ethers. Suitable feedstocks are cat cracker debutaniser and steam cracker depropaniser feed. The preferred alcohol is methanol.

Such organic reactions include the reaction of an olefin with a carboxylic acid in the liquid or vapour phase to produce an ester, e.g. reaction of ethylene with acetic acid to produce ethyl acetate, reaction of an alkanol with a linear olefin at temperatures above 100°C to produce an ether, the conversion of primary or secondary aliphatic alcohols or polyols into ethers, the conversion of primary or secondary amines into secondary and tertiary amines respectively and the reaction of an olefin with benzene to produce an alkyl benzene.

A lubricant additive with both VI improving and dispersant properties is a polyisobutylene succinimide derived from a polyisobutylene with a weight average molecular weight of at least 10,000 and with a molar ratio of amine to acid or anhydride groups of less than 1:1. The use of such molar ratios enhances the VI improving properties by improving the viscosity/temperature relationship.
