Provided are a method for efficiently producing an asymmetric conjugated diyne from an inexpensive and safe alternative compound to hydroxylamine hydrochloride and a method for producing a Z,Z-conjugated diene compound from the asymmetric conjugated diyne compound thus obtained. More specifically, provided is a method for producing an asymmetric conjugated diyne compound comprising a step of subjecting a terminal alkyne compound (1): HC≡C-Z 1 -Y 1 to a coupling reaction with an alkynyl halide (2): Y 2 -Z 2 -C≡C-X by using sodium borohydride in water and an organic solvent in the presence of a copper catalyst and a base to obtain the asymmetric conjugated diyne compound (3): Y 2 -Z 2 -C≡C-C≡C-Z 1 -Y 1 . In addition, provided is a method for producing a Z,Z-conjugated diene compound by reducing the resulting asymmetric conjugated diyne compound, or the like.

In a process for the production of higher alcohols, i.e. C4+ alcohols, from syngas, the syngas is first reacted in a heterogeneous alcohol pre-converter (A) using an alcohol synthesis catalyst, whereby methanol as the main product in a concentration corresponding to or close to the equilibrium A concentration is produced. Then the effluent from the pre-converter is mixed with unconverted wet recycle gas and reacted in a heterogeneous reactor for higher alcohols synthesis (B) containing a higher alcohols synthesis catalyst, and finally the effluent from the reactor for higher alcohols synthesis is separated into (i) unconverted syngas, which is recycled to the higher alcohols synthesis reactor, (ii) methanol and light alcohols, which are recycled to the higher alcohols synthesis reactor, and (iii) the final product consisting of higher alcohols.

The invention provides a process for preparing m- or p-substituted phenylalkanols of the formula (I) in which R 1 is m- or p-bonded to the phenyl ring and is C 1 -C 5 -alkyl, and R 2 , R 3, R 4 and R 5 are each independently hydrogen or methyl, which is characterized in that an unsubstituted phenylalkanol of the formula (II) in which R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are each as defined for formula (I) is alkylated together with a C 1 -C 5 -alkyl halide of the formula (III) R 1 Hal (III), in which R 1 is as defined for formula (I) and Hal is halogen, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, to give an m- or p-alkyl-substituted phenylalkanol of the formula (I), then the reaction mixture is worked up and the desired m- or p-alkyl-substituted phenylalkanol of the formula (I) is removed, the remaining by-products formed are returned to the reaction mixture and these are isomerized in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to give the desired m- or p- alkyl-substituted phenylalkanol. The m- or p-alkyl-substituted phenylalkanols of the formula (I) can be used to form, by oxidation or dehydrogenation, as products of value, the corresponding aldehydes, which are of interest as fragrances and aroma chemicals.
