摘要: A method and apparatus for processing mail is provided. The mail is serially fed from a stack of mail into a system transport (40). The system transport conveys the mail to an imaging station (45), which scans the mail to obtain image data corresponding to at least a portion of each piece. From the imaging station, the mail is conveyed to a buffer (50), which selectively maintains the mail while the address printed on the mail is determined. After the address for a piece of mail is determined, the piece is conveyed out of the buffer to a printer (80), which prints a POSTNET barcode onto the piece. The POSTNET barcode corresponds to the address that was determined for the piece. Optionally, the apparatus may include a labeller (70) for applying a blank label onto the mail, and the POSTNET barcode can then be printed onto the label after it is applied to the mail. After the POSTNET barcode is printed on a piece, it is conveyed past a verifier (85), which scans the printed POSTNET barcode to ensure that the barcode was printed properly. The mail is then sorted and stacked in a plurality of output bins (96, 97, 98, 99).

摘要: An apparatus (10) is provided for sorting a group of documents contained with an envelope into selected batches of documents. An envelope feeder (15) feeds a group of envelopes containing documents onto a document transport (75). A document extractor (50) positioned along the path of movement extracts the documents from the envelopes. A system controller (95) identifies the documents extracted from each envelope as a single transaction. An orientation detector including a magnetic image reader (135) and an optical image reader (140) determines the orientation of selected documents. A document orientor (145, 150, 170) changes the orientation of documents into a desired orientation. A document feeder selectively feeds batch identification pieces. An image acquisition device (230) acquires an image of the batch identification pieces and selected documents conveyed along the path of movement to enable the system controller (95) to assign documents of selected transactions into selected batches. A document sorter (300) sorts the documents of respective batches into selected output areas.

摘要: A method and apparatus for processing mail is provided. A stack of mail is placed into an input bin (30) which conveys the mail towards a feeder (50) which in turn feeds the envelopes by engaging the lead envelope and displacing it transverse the stack. The mail is then fed into a shuttle (100) which vertically displaces the envelopes and positions them for entry into a justifier (122). The justifier (122) justifies the top edge of each envelope and conveys it to a cutter (120) which severes its top edge. A transport (140) then conveys the envelope to an extractor (190) which opens the mail to allow the contents to be manually removed. Thereafter, the transport (140) conveys the empty envelopes to a verifier (200) which verifies the removal of the contents before the envelope is discarded.

摘要: An apparatus (1) for the automated processing of bulk mail which incorporates a number of operating stations (2, 5, 25) that serve to accomplish the various aspects of mail extraction, as well as the subsequent processing of extracted documents, and which are operatively associated with one another to serially process envelopes (39, 40) and extracted documents (41, 42) in continuous fashion and substantially independent of their characteristic features. To this end, the operating stations (2, 5, 25) of the apparatus are configured to be as independent as posible of the characteristics of the envelopes (39, 40) and their contents (41, 42) so that envelopes (39, 40) and contents (41, 42) of varied characteristics can be effectively handled by the apparatus (1) without requiring any significant adjustments. As a result, the apparatus (1) is made capable of processing (as a single job if desired) envelopes (39, 40) and contents (41, 42) of varied characteristics, reducing the need to remove non-conforming envelopes (39, 40) and contents (41, 42) from further processing, and increasing the versatility and productivity of the apparatus (1).

摘要: A system for processing document to scan the documents to obtain optical image data representing the document is provided. The system (10) includes elements that reduce or eliminate the effects of debris that can create streaks in the scanned images. One element is a recess (174) in the lens (170) through which an imaging device (60) scans the document. Another element is a guide (80) having an opening (84) opposing the lens (70, 170) of the imaging device (60). The opening (84) reduces or eliminates light reflecting off the guide back to the imaging device so that the area around the document is scanned as black.
