This invention relates to an engraving system (10) and method for engraving a pattern using a plurality of engraving devices. The invention discloses apparatus and method for sequencing and engraving a plurality of engraving devices such that when the areas engraved by those heads meet they provide a continuous engraved pattern. The system and method also comprises an imaging system for imaging the engraved areas associated with each engraving head (34,36) so that the heads or signals driving the heads may be adjusted to provide engraved areas which appear as if they had been engraved by a single head when, for example, the engraved area of one head meets that of another head. Also disclosed is a method for sequencing and transmitting image data to be engraved to accommodate any cylindrical offset or the angular displacement between two engraving heads. Finally, a single, multi-purpose engraving system and method are shown for both exposing resist on a workpiece and also engraving either the same or a different workpiece.

A computer controlled engraving system having a non-volatile memory (40) loaded with error coefficients. The error coefficients represent previously experienced differences between computed cell configuration values and corresponding configuration values for cells actually engraved. Sets of error coefficients are tabulated and stored in the memory (40) along with associated setup parameters. Setup of the engraving system for a new job is swiftly accomplished by using values of the setup parameters to retrieve sets of approximate error coefficients, from which interpolated values are obtained. The interpolated values of the error coefficients then are used for calculating configuration control parameters such as AC gain, video gain and white offset.

A system for locating a plurality of engraving heads on an engraver wherein a plurality of engraving heads are automatically positioned into a predetermined configuration. A mechanism for positioning the engraving heads preferably includes a leadscrew and a drive nut which is rotatable relative to the leadscrew. In addition, each of the engraving heads preferably includes a rotatable drive nut with a respective motor for rotating the nut whereby the heads may be selectively positioned into a predetermined configuration. In a further aspect of the invention, the engraving heads are mounted on a carriage which is movable in an axial direction relative to a cylinder to be engraved. The heads are selectively positionable on the carriage and the carriage includes a nut threadably engaged with a leadscrew whereby the carriage may be driven in an axial direction relative to the cylinder to be engraved. In yet another aspect of the invention, a method is provided for engraving a cylinder including mounting a cylinder in the engraver, automatically adjusting a plurality of engraving heads into a predetermined configuration, and engraving a plurality of images onto the cylinder.

The platform (50) has a deck (15) which is supported by a pair of flexible support columns (22a, 22b). In operation the platform (50) is situated alongside a rotating printing cylinder (10). The engraving head (12) is mounted on the deck (15) of the platform (50) and is provided with a guide shoe (13) which rides against the surface of the printing cylinder (10). As the cylinder (10) rotates to angular positions having different radii, the engraving head (12) responds with a purely linear reaction. Consequently the engraving head (12) is able to engrave uniform-depth cavities (32) in the surface of the printing cylinder (10). The engraving head apparatus including a magnetostrictive actuator formed from TERFENOL-D™ which elongatably drives a diamond-tipped stylus arm in a reciprocal manner in response to a varying magnetic field created by a bias coil and a drive coil. The bias coil establishes a DC biasing magnetic field which causes an initial expansion of the actuator to approximately one-half the total linear expansion limit of the actuator. The drive coil is concentrically interposed between the actuator and the bias coil and modulates the magnetic field intensity established by the bias coil to cause additional expansion and contraction of the actuator about the initial expansion point.

An automatic tool changing and verification system and method and system for switching engraving heads is shown. The tool changing method and system comprises a turret having a plurality of work holders for holding a plurality of replacement tools. Some of the work holders are empty for receiving a worn tool from an engraving head on the engraver. When it is desired to change a tool on the engraving head, an empty tool holder is indexed to a tool changing position opposite the engraving head whereupon the worn tool is transferred from the engraving head to the tool changer. Thereafter, the tool changer is indexed to position where a replacement tool is situated in opposed relationship with the engraving head. In the embodiment shown, the tool changer comprises a pneumatic system for causing the worn tools and replacement tools to be transferred between the engraving head and the tool changer. Other features of the invention comprise a tool verification routine for verifying that a tool on an engraving head is the correct tool and/or is not defective. Moreover, another aspect of the invention includes a engraving head turret having multiple engraving heads for indexing into engraving relationship with a cylinder to be engraved. The multiple-engraving head turret facilitates, for example, reducing the number of required tool changes.

This invention relates to an engraving method and apparatus for engraving a cylinder (10, 12) for printing an intaglio pattern on a web of material. The engraver comprises a driver for rotatably driving the cylinder and a computer (34) for controlling the operation of the engraver corresponding to the predetermined intaglio pattern. The stylus (58) having a generally flat cutting edge or surface. The engraving head also capable of engraving at response times of less than 200-300 microseconds, thereby enabling the engraving head to engrave the intaglio cylinder in response to the intaglio engraving signal (38). The apparatus and method also comprise a fine line boost routine for facilitating engraving fine areas or lines of the intaglio pattern. There is also provided apparatus and method for controlling ink flow (144, 145, 147) in large engraved areas or intaglio trenches (72a, 72b, 74, 76, 77a, 77b, 78). The apparatus and method facilitate engraving intaglio grooves or trenches which may be generally rectangular in cross section, and which were engraved in response to a pulse-width modulated intaglio engraving signal generated by the computer.
