The present application relates to water-soluble or water dispersible copolymers P which is obtainable by copolymerizing a monomer composition of ethylenically unsaturated monomers M comprising a) 50 to 92 wt.-%, in particular 53 to 87 wt.-%, especially 55 to 83 wt.-%, based on the total amount of monomers M, of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer M.a selected from the group consisting of nonionic esters of methacrylic acid and C 8 -C 20 -vinyl aromatic monomers, b) 3 to 30 wt.-%, in particular 5 to 25 wt.-%, especially 7 to 20 wt.-%, based on the total amount of monomers M, of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer M.b which comprises at least one sulfonic acid group or a salt thereof, c) 5 to 35 wt.-%, in particular 8 to 30 wt.-%, especially 10 to 25 wt.-%, based on the total amount of monomers M, of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer M.c which comprises at least one oxazoline group, d) less than 10 wt.-%, in particular at most 5 wt.-% and especially at most 1 wt.-%, based on the total amount of monomers M, of a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer M.d selected from the group consisting of C 1 -C 20 -alkylesters of acrylic acid, where the copolymers P do essentially not contain copolymerized monomers bearing a carboxyl group and where the copolymers P have a glass transition temperature, as determined by differential scanning calorimetry according to ISO 11357-2:2013-05, of at most 90°C, in particular at most 85°C and especially at most 80°C. Disclosed is a method for applying corrosion-resistant layers, especially integrated pretreatment layers or layers for atmospheric corrosion protection, to metallic surfaces. In said method, copolymers are used which contain monomers comprising 20 to 70 percent by weight of nitrogen heterocyles, monomers comprising 10 to 50 percent of acidic groups, 10 to 50 percent by weight of vinyl aromatic monomers, and 0 to 25 percent by weight of other optional monomers as monomeric constitutional units. Also disclosed are copolymers having said composition as well as preparations for applying corrosion-resistant layers.
