The object of the present invention is to provide an electric drive system which ensures effective generation of torque from the start to the maximum speed, and extended cruising distance and upgraded running performances. The drive system according to the present invention is characterized in that, in an electric vehicle to be driven by the wheels which are driven by the rotary output of two or more motors (5,6), said two or more motors (5,6) comprise at least two different types of motors, and the system is provided with the control means (10) to adjust the share of the vehicle driving force to be generated by each of said motors in conformity to the running state of said vehicle. These two or more motors (5,6) comprise a combination of a low speed drive motor (5) and high speed drive motor (6), and a highly efficient motor is used as said low speed motor (5), while a motor having a greater capacity and greater base speed than said low speed drive motor (5) is used as the high speed drive motor (6). The share of the driving force of said vehicle is controlled by the control means such that up to the maximum torque is generated by said low speed drive motor (5), with the remaining torque generated by said high speed drive motor (6).

The stator (4) also has a yoke (9B,9C) surrounding the rotor (3) and the rotor (3) is positioned such that it is closer to one part (9B) of the outer periphery of the yoke than another part (9B) of the yoke. Such a motor is particularly suitable for use in a disk drive unit as a spindle motor (2) for rotating the disk (1). Then an actuator (12) for moving a head (11) may be located adjacent the part (9B) of the outer periphery of the yoke (9b,9C) which is closest to the rotor. This permits the head (11) to approach closely the axis of rotation of the disk (1) without the spindle motor (2) interfering with the movement of the head (11). The continuous yoke (9B,9C) prevents magnetic flux leakage from the spindle motor interfering with the actuator (12). The actuator (12) may itself have a yoke (9D) integral with the yoke (9B,9C) of the spindle motor (2), and/or other components in common.

The pump has a coil 14 deposed in a ring form around and along a stator core 13. The electric motor drives the pump by rotating a rotor 16 disposed to face the inner of the stator core 13 as the coil 14 is energized. The present invention provides a compact electric pump with no coil ends, thus ensuring improved in-vehicle mountability. Further, the present invention permits efficient cooling of the electric motor adapted to discharge a cooling medium. Still further, the present invention permits use of a stator core made from a compressed powder core by molding with resin.
