Provided is an exhaust gas purifying filter which shortens the combustion time of the particulate matter that is deposited on the partition walls, during the regeneration of a ceramic honeycomb structure, while maintaining the efficiency of capturing the particulate matter and suppressing an increase in the pressure loss, thereby preventing the destruction of the ceramic honeycomb structure, and which can also reduce the fuel use that is required to increase the exhaust gas temperature and bring about an enhancement of the fuel efficiency. The exhaust gas purifying filter of the present invention includes a filter body (11) formed from a porous body having an inflow surface through which an exhaust gas containing particulate matter flows in, an emitting surface through which purified gas is emitted, and a number of fine pores, and the filter body (11) has a partition wall (14) and a number of gas flow channels (12) surrounded by the partition wall (14) and extended along the longitudinal direction thereof, and a porous membrane (13) containing at least silicon and carbon is provided on the inner wall surface (12a) of the gas flow channel (12).

Provided are an anti-microbial matrix and filtration systems containing the same. The matrix comprises a surface-modified inorganic component and a polymeric binder comprising particles having an irregular, convoluted surface. The surface-modified inorganic component comprises a reaction product of an anti-microbial component and an inorganic component. The anti-microbial component comprises a quaternary ammonium salt containing an epoxide group. A covalent bond is, for example, between the quaternary ammonium cation and a hydroxyl group of the inorganic component. The quaternary ammonium salt can be poly(methyldiallylamine epichlorohydrin). Further, the quaternary ammonium salt can have the formula according to I: (Formula I), wherein n is in the range of 5 to 24. The inorganic component can be diatomaceous earth. The polymeric binder can comprise ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW PE). Methods of making and using the same are also provided.

In producing a honeycomb filter 10, silicon carbide serving as an aggregate and alumina serving as a sintering aid that accelerates sintering of silicon carbide are mixed such that the amount of alumina is 1.0% by weight or less relative to the total amount of silicon carbide and alumina to form a puddle, the puddle is molded at a pressure of 20 MPa or less, and firing is performed at a firing temperature that is lower than the temperature at which sintering is performed without mixing a sintering aid. In the honeycomb filter 10 produced by this production method, the bending strength at 900°C is 55% or more (in particular, 80% or more) relative to the bending strength at room temperature.
