A novel method and apparatus are provided for making an improved welded joint between overlapping lengths of thermoplastic strap (U,L). The welded joint includes a central region and an adjacent peripheral region. The pressure on the strap joint during formation is released first in the peripheral region and subsequently in the central region. An embodiment of the apparatus for making such a joint includes an anvil (32), a central strap-engaging member (96), a peripheral strap engaging member (80), and a mechanism for moving the anvil sequentially to three positions. At a first position the overlapping strap lengths are pressed between the anvil and both the central and peripheral strap-engaging members. In the second position of the anvil the peripheral strap-engaging member does not press against the strap lengths while the central strap-engaging member continues to press the strap lengths against the anvil. In the third position of the anvil the anvil and strap-engaging members are sufficiently spaced apart to release all of the pressure on the strap lengths.

The invention relates to a mobile strapping device (1) for wrapping material to be packed with a strap, the device comprising a tensioning unit (6) for applying a strap tension to a loop of a strap, and a closure unit for producing a welded closure, particularly a friction welded or vibration welded connection, on two superposed regions of the strap loop. The device also comprises an energy supply, particularly a rechargeable energy store for storing electrical energy, the electrical energy being used as driving energy for motor-powered driving movements of the strapping device (1), a housing (2) having a front housing region formed as a cover part for the tensioning unit (6) and a rear housing region preferably provided for receiving the energy store, and a handle (3), arranged between the front and the rear housing regions, for holding the strapping device. The object of the invention is to improve the ergonomic properties of said strapping device. To this end, a display means is provided, which is arranged on the rear housing region (37) of the housing (2) for the strapping device (1), in order to display operating information of the strapping device.

The invention relates to a pneumatically actuated strapping apparatus for strapping plastic tape around a packaging item, comprising a motorized tensioning device and a motorized welding device for the plastic tape. The strapping apparatus is characterized in that the tensioning device and the welding device are driven by the same pneumatic motor (8). The direction of rotation of the pneumatic motor can be inverted, the pneumatic motor being connected to the devices by two freewheeling mechanisms releasing the devices in opposite directions. In order to keep power consumption for evacuating non-operational air low, in a particularly preferred embodiment, switching valves which automatically discharge the non-operational air to the exterior are integrated into the air intake ducts that are used as evacuation ducts for the non-operational air when the direction of rotation is inverted.
