The invention relates to a method for processing polymer solutions comprising N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and a polymer, the polymer solution being hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst using hydrogen. The invention also relates to the product that can be obtained by this method and to the use of said product for producing, in particular, polyarylene ether products.

The invention relates to a method for producing 1,6-hexanediol, a hexanediol having a nitrogen weight of less than 5 ppm being obtained. The invention further relates to 1,6-hexanediol having a nitrogen content of less than 5 ppm and to the use of said 1,6-hexanediol for producing polymers.

The invention relates to a method for purifying 1,4-butynediol, in which 1,4-butynediol is compressed to 50 to 1500 bar and is expanded, one waits for phase separation to end following the expansion process, and the bottom phase is eliminated. Also disclosed is a method for hydrogenating 1,4-butynediol into 1,4-butenediol and 1,4-butanediol with the aid of the purified 1,4-butynediol.

Process for the preparation of an N-alkyl lactam with improved colour quality, where 0.01 to 10% by weight of a C1-10-alcohol or a compound which releases 0.01 to 10% by weight of a C1-10-alcohol is added to the N-alkyl lactam. Mixture comprising at least 99.0% by weight of an N-alkyl lactam and in the range from 100 to 5000 ppm by weight of a C1-10-alcohol or of an acetal, aminal or an ortho ester which releases in the range from 100 to 5000 ppm by weight of a C1-10-alcohol.

The invention relates to a method for producing 1,6-hexanediol, preferably of at least 99% purity, and especially practically free from 1,4-cyclohexanediols, from a carboxylic acid mixture that is obtained as a byproduct of the oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone/cyclohexanol using oxygen or oxygen-containing gases and by extraction of the reaction mixture with water, by transesterification and hydration to form hexanediol, the yield in valuable products being increased by adding a monomer or polymer polyol with at least three hydroxyl functional groups after a transesterification stage in which catalysts that contain at least one element of groups 3 to 14 are used.
