The invention relates to a method for producing optionally alkyl-substituted 1,4-butanediol by means of two-stage catalytic hydration in the gas phase, comprising the following steps: a) a gas stream of C4-dicarboxylic acid or a derivative thereof is fed into a first reactor and the gas phase is catalytically hydrated so as to obtain a product mainly containing optionally alkyl-substituted y-butyrolactone; b) the obtained product stream is fed into a second reactor and the gas phase is catalytically hydrated so as to obtain optionally alkyl-substituted 1,4-butanediol; c) the desired product is separated from intermediate products, by-products, and an optionally unreacted starting material. A catalyst comprising = 95 percent by weight of CuO and = 5 percent by weight of an oxidic carrier is used in each hydration stage. The product mixture obtained in the first hydration step is introduced into the second hydration stage without further cleaning said product mixture.

The invention relates to a catalyst containing from 0.1 to 20 mass % rhenium and 0.05 to 10 mass % platinum in relation to the total mass thereof. The inventive method for producing a support for said catalyst consists in a) treating a support which can be eventually pre-treated with the aid of a solution of rhenium compound, b) drying and annealing said support at a temperature ranging from 80 to 600 °C, and c) impregnating the support with a solution of platinum compound and in drying it. The inventive method for producing alcohol by catalytic hydrogenation of carbonyl compound on said catalyst is also disclosed.

A method is described for continuous production of adiponitrile by hydrocyanation of 3-pentenenitrile in which a) 3-pentenenitrile is hydrocyanized to yield a reaction discharge which contains adiponitrile, b) in a work-up 1 of the reaction discharge of the reactor R1, a mixture containing cis-2-methyl-2-butenenitrile and cis-2-pentenenitrile is separated as a top product in a first distillation device, c) the mixture containing cis-2-methyl-2-butenenitrile and cis-2-pentenenitrile from step b) is continuously isomerized in a reactor R2 in the presence of aluminum oxide as catalyst to a product mixture containing 3-pentenenitrile, d) in a work-up 2, cis-2-methyl-2-butenenitrile is separated and discharged as top product from the reaction discharge of reactor R2 in a distillation device.
