The method comprises transmitting information for assigning a dedicated control channel and a traffic channel to a mobile station, when a call is generated; after call setup, transmitting a message requesting mobile station's capability information to the mobile station; receiving the capability information including gating availability information of a reverse pilot signal and information about at least one gating rate, transmitted from the mobile station in reply to the request message; and determining a gating rate according to the capability information, transmitting information about the determined gating rate to the mobile station, and transitioning to an active state. The mobile station's capability information includes information about gating availability and at least one gating rate, when gating is available.

There is provided a novel architecture for transmitting multimedia data with different QoSs in a mobile communication system. In a protocol structure according to the present invention, an RLP layer receives data with different QoSs and dividing the data into datagrams according to the QoSs, a MUX layer multiplexes the datagrams received from the RLP layer and outputs multiplexed TU data, and a QCCH receives the multiplexed TU data and outputs TU blocks with the QoSs by puncturing and repeating information added according to the QoSs for the multiplexed TU data.

The base station receives information indicating that a mobile station has data to transmit, over an access preamble channel. The base station transmits use status information of physical channels and maximum available data rate information on a status indicator channel. The mobile station receives the use status information of physical channels and the maximum available data rate information through the status indicator channel from a base station. The mobile station transmits to the base station an access preamble for requesting allocation of a given physical channel determined depending on the use status information and the maximum available data rate information.

A reverse data rate controlling method in a mobile communication system for transmission of packet data is provided. In an embodiment of the present invention, an RRL (Reverse Rate Limit) message includes an ignore RAB (Reverse Activity Bit) field to ensure a predetermined data rate for a particular access terminal (AT). In another embodiment of the present invention, an access probability is set for each data rate in the RRL message. Upon receipt of an RAB, an AT compares a random number with the access probability for its data rate and increases or decreases the data rate according to the comparison result.

There is provided a data transmitting method in a CDMA system. In the CDMA system, a control hold state and an active state are set for data transmission between a mobile station and a base station. The control hold state is entered to transmit a control signal on a dedicated control channel and the active state is divided into a low rate transmission substate for transmitting a small amount of data on the dedicated control channel or/and a fundamental channel and a high rate transmission substate for transmitting a large amount of data on a supplemental channel and on at least one of the dedicated control channel and the fundamental channel. When a large amount of user data is generated in the mobile station, the mobile station generates a supplemental channel request message including supplemental channel request information needed to transit from the control hold state to the high rate transmission substate without interposition of the low rate transmission substate and state transition information needed to transit from the control hold state to the active state, and transmits the supplemental channel request message to the base station.
