A powder coating composition and method of applying it to a substrate, such as medium density fibreboard, consisting of a glycidyl methacrylate resin, a dicarboxylic acid cross-linking agent, a catalyst selected from phosphines, phosphonium, ammonium 2-phenyl-2-imidazoline, substituted imidazoline and isopropyl imidazole Bis-A epoxy resin adduct and a matte texturing agent. The inventive formulation is able to create a matte texture finish on the surface of the substrate. Since the cured final coating is resistant to yellowing and moisture, it is of great utility in the kitchen cabinet making industry.

The coating material for layers (II), (III) and (IV) is made of a combination of (a) epoxidation products of unsaturated fatty acid esters having a chain 8 to 22 carbons long with polyvalent aliphatic alcohols with 2 to 6 C atoms and in average more than one epoxide group per molecule; and (b) partial esters of polycarboxylic acids with polyether polyols containing at least one free carboxylic acid group per molecule and a double bond; (c) an optional water-proofing agent; and (d) other optional additives from the group that consists of fillers, pigments, foaming agents and auxiliary substances. The weight ratio between components (a) and (b) lies between 0.6:1 and 1:1.4.

The invention provides highly functional epoxy resins that may be used themselves in coating formulations and applications but which may be further functionalized via ring-opening reactions of the epoxy groups yielding derivative resins with other useful functionalities. The highly functional epoxy resins are synthesized from the epoxidation of vegetable or seed oil esters of polyols having 4 or more hydroxyl groups/molecule. In one embodiment, the polyol is sucrose and the vegetable or seed oil is selected from corn oil, castor oil, soybean oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, linseed oil, tall oil fatty acid, tung oil, vernonia oil, and mixtures thereof. Methods of making of the epoxy resin and each of its derivative resins are disclosed as are coating compositions and coated objects using each of the resins.

This invention relates to bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acids reacted with vinyl ether compounds to form liquid vinyl-blocked bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acids. These liquid vinyl-blocked bio- based polyfunctional carboxylic acids can be mixed with a polyfunctional vegetable oil-based epoxy resin to form a homogeneous curable coating composition. Upon curing at elevated temperature, thermoset coatings are formed which have excellent hardness, solvent resistance, adhesion, and flexibility. The invention also relates to the use of a curable coating composition comprising at least one polyfunctional vegetable oil-based epoxy resin and at least one vinyl-blocked bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acid, which may be coated onto a substrate and cured thermally. Methods of making the vinyl-blocked bio- based polyfunctional carboxylic acids and curable coating compositions and substrates containing the same are also disclosed.
