Disclosed is a gasification technique for converting biomass, which is difficult to treat, into clean gas fuel able to be burned in a cogeneration system. The gasification technique includes first stage fluidized-bed catalytic gasification, and second stage gasification of tar and catalytic reforming to convert nitrogen in tar, and HCN in a flammable gas into NH3, unlike conventional gasification techniques. In addition, since the temperature of a total gasification process is lower than a melting point of ash, powdery ash is generated and thus easily treated. Also, little heat is released due to the low process temperature, and therefore, a compact reactor may be designed to produce gas having a high caloric value. Further, the generated tar is recovered and reused in other processes, and the gas fuel contains a small amount of ammonia.

Said gasification stage consists in transferring and injecting the carbon-containing solid materials and the pyrolysis cracked gases to a vertical saturated fluidised bed incinerator (301), said gases being used as fluidisation media in said furnace and the carbon-containing solid materials being mixed with the sand bed thereof. The present invention is directed to a process for treating, reducing, and/or stabilizing various wastes or flue gases. In one embodiment, the process is directed to treatment of alkali bearing wastes that include nitrate and/or nitrite-rich wastes. Optionally, the disclosed method can be utilized for treatment of hazardous wastes, including radioactive hazardous waste compounds. In general, the present invention includes processing a waste or gaseous stream with the addition of suitable carbon-containing additives to treat and reduce nitrogen-containing compounds in the waste. Additives may be gaseous, liquid or solid reduction-promoting agents, catalysts, and the like. The reaction products obtained from the process of the invention include mainly alkali carbonate, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.

The invention relates to a method of gasifying raw materials comprising combustible components. The inventive method is characterised in that the heating of the raw materials and endothermic drying, pyrolysis and gasification reactions by vapour take place in at least a first compartment (4), or reactor, of a horizontal rotary cylindrical furnace (1). According to the invention, the thermochemical treatments, which are performed in the reactor, receive solely sensible heat which is conveyed by a solid heat-transfer medium (2) that is cooled in said reactor by between 40 and 70 °C to a temperature which is less than 900 °C and less than the melting temperature of the ash generated. The aforementioned solid heat-transfer medium (2) is itself heated by a part of the gaseous fuel, which is supplied by the reactor, in a second compartment (3) of the horizontal rotary cylindrical furnace, called the heater, said heat-transfer medium (2) being moved continuously between the two compartments (3, 4) during operation. The invention also relates to an installation that is used to carry out said method.

A combustion method and apparatus in which combustible matter, e.g., waste matter, coal, etc., is gasified to produce a combustible gas containing a sufficiently large amount of combustible component to melt the ash by its own heat. A fluidized-bed furnace (2) has an approximately circular horizontal cross-sectional configuration. A moving bed (9), in which a fluidized medium settles and diffuses, is formed in the central portion of the furnace, and a fluidized bed (10), in which the fluidized medium is actively fluidized, is formed in the peripheral portion in the furnace. The fluidized medium is turned over to the upper part of the moving bed (9) from the upper part of the fluidized bed (10), thus circulating through the two beds. Combustible matter (11) is cast into the upper part of the moving bed (9) and gasified to form a combustible gas while circulating, together with the fluidized medium. The amount of oxygen supplied to the fluidized-bed furnace (2) is set so as to be the same contained in an amount of air not higher than 30% of the theoretical amount of combustion air. The temperature of the fluidized bed (10) is maintained at 450°C to 650°C so that the combustible gas produced contains a large amount of combustible component. The combustible gas and fine particles produced in the fluidized-bed furnace (2) are supplied to a melt combustion furnace where they are burned at high temperature, and the resulting ash is melted.

An improved system and method is provided for operating a parallel entrainment fluidized bed gasifier system (A). A first aspect of the present invention relates to a method for reducing ash agglomeration in a parallel entrainment fluidized bed gasifier/combustor system (20/22) by adding a quantity of MgO to the feedstock used in the gasifier/combustor system (20/22). A second aspect of the present invention relates to an apparatus and method for reducing erosion at piping bends in fluidized particulate piping systems which utilizes sand retention cavities (70) positioned to receive and retain a portion of the fluidized particulate. A third aspect of the present invention relates to an apparatus and method for facilitating the flow of sand and char fragments from a first compartment to a second compartment while minimizing the flow of gases between the first and second compartments.
