It is suggested to use a time evolvement function, taking into account the time evolvement of the fluid flow demand and/or the time evolvement of the pumping strokes, to modify the actuation of the electrically commutated valves. The said time evolvement function comprises a variable being indicative of a fluid flow demand, wherein a threshold level of said variable is chosen in a way that a pumping/motoring stroke is initiated in advance of the actual demand.

Piston compressors use predominantly self-actuated valves that are controlled by pressure differences. The main components of these valves are the valve seat and collector, one or more closing mechanisms, usually a plate or rings, and damping and spring mechanisms. Each time that the piston enters an admission or compression phase, this large number of parts is caused to move upwards and depending on the lift of the closing mechanisms and the pressure and density of the gas, placed under considerable dynamic strain. This can limit endurance as a result of fractures of the closing, damping and spring mechanisms. The valves are also placed under considerable strain as a result of delivery rate regulation due to the build-up pressure or backflow through a lift gripper. The large number of elements that have to be moved and their susceptibility, and the opening cross-sections that are limited by the valve stroke are a constant disadvantage. The aim of the invention is to provide a device and a method for controlling a piston engine independently of variable operating conditions and speed changes and to improve the means of influencing the delivery quantity so as to avoid the aforementioned disadvantages. The inventive device and method can be used for regulating a piston engine in piston compressors and vacuum pumps.
