In order to make it possible to specify a cell or a module generating an abnormality in a power generating performance (a voltage, a current and the like) without dissembling a fuel battery stack, a gasket for a fuel battery having gaskets on both surfaces of a print circuit for taking out an electric signal within the cell or the module is held between separators, and an electric signal take-out portion for taking out an electric signal (the voltage, the current and the like) is integrally assembled together with a seal.

The present specification discloses a polymer electrolyte fuel cell comprising a stack containing a plurality of unit cells laminated, compressed and retained via a retaining plate, the unit cell comprising a pair of electrodes sandwiching a polymer electrolyte membrane therebetween and a conductive separator plates having a gas supply channel on at least one surface thereof and sandwiching the electrodes therebetween, wherein the retaining plate forms a gap between the unit cells. According to the fuel cell of the present invention, it is possible to readily remove a defective unit cell from the stack and replace the same.
摘要:
A diagnostic method and apparatus for detecting cell reversal in a fuel cell stack. The inventive method and apparatus determines the average cell or cluster voltage change of all of the cells or clusters in the stack over a time period and the individual cell or cluster voltage change during the same time period and generates a difference between the average cell or cluster voltage change and the individual cell or cluster voltage change which is compared with a reference acceptable difference. The method and apparatus generate an output indicating impending cell reversal if the voltage of an individual cell or cluster changes significantly more or less than the average voltage change of the rest of the cells or clusters in the stack.

The CO-concentration in the H 2 feed stream to a PEM fuel cell stack (2) is monitored by measuring current and voltage behavior patterns from an auxiliary cell (44) attached to the end of the stack. The auxiliary cell is connected to the same oxygen and hydrogen feed manifolds (36,38) that supply the stack, and discharges through a constant load (58). Pattern recognition software compares the current and voltage patterns from the auxiliary cell to current and voltage signature determined from a reference cell similar to the auxiliary cell and operated under controlled conditions over a wide range of CO-concentrations in the H 2 fuel stream.

A method and apparatus are provided for monitoring the performance of fuel cells arranged in series. More particularly, the method and apparatus involve the measurement and comparison of fuel cell performance indicators, such as voltage, in groups of cells connected in series. In a first embodiment, the voltage across each fuel cell group is compared to a reference voltage equal to a predetermined minimum voltage. In a second embodiment, the voltage across each group is compared to a reference voltage equal to the average across all fuel cell groups. In a third embodiment, a reference voltage equal to the voltage across one group is compared to the voltage across each of the other fuel cell groups. In a fourth embodiment, the voltage across each group is compared as a reference voltage to the voltage across an adjacent fuel cell group. Other embodiments comprising various combinations of the first, second, third and fourth embodiments are also provided. An alarm is activated, and supply of fuel to the cells discontinued, when the measured voltage for a fuel cell group varies from the reference voltage by more than a predetermined voltage differential.

An AC component ΔI addition unit (510) of a diagnostic device (5) superimposes an alternating current on an output current of a fuel cell (10). A Zn calculation unit (520) calculates a cell impedance with respect to the alternating current with regard to any of a plurality of cells (10a). A diagnosis unit (530) diagnoses that any cell (10a) is subjected to hydrogen deficiency when an absolute value of the cell impedance exceeds (absolute value of a reference impedance + a predetermined value β). It is diagnosed that any cell (10a) is subjected to oxygen deficiency when the absolute value of the cell impedance is smaller than (absolute value of the reference impedance-a predetermined value α).
