A radio receiver or transmitter including a tunable filter constituted by an N-path filter (14) having a local oscillator (52). the centre frequency of which filter is displaced from the oscillator (52) frequency through the use of feedback (26). In the case of a radio receiver the feedback provides image rejection. Preferably an i.f. signal is taken from the low frequency section of the N-path filter. In the case of a radio transmitter, an i.f. signal is applied to a low frequency path within the N-path filter. The use of feedback avoids the generation of an image frequency transmission.

Self-interference cancellers are provided. The self-interference cancellers can include multiple second-order, N-path Gm-C filters. Each filter can be configured to cancel self- interference on a channel of a desired bandwidth. Each filter can be independently controlled using a variable transmitter resistance, a variable receiver resistance, a variable baseband capacitance, a variable transconductance, and a variable time shift between local oscillators that control switches in the filter. By controlling these variables, magnitude, phase, slope of magnitude, and slope of phase of the cancellers frequency responses can be controlled for self- interference cancellation. A calibration process is also provided for configuring the canceller.

In an electrical test instrument for determining a loop impedance in a circuit breaker protected AC circuit, a test current of less than the circuit breaker trigger current is supplied to the circuit and the test voltage which develops due to the test current is isolated and detected. For testing a 240 volts 50 Hertz mains supply circuit, the test instrument includes a two-path cross synchronised filter (4) which rejects the 240 volts mains signal to isolate the test voltage signal to enable an accurate determination of the loop impedance to be made.
