A fairing for protecting a payload from excessive acoustic energy is disclosed. The fairing can be used with a launch vehicle for launching payloads such as satellites or the like. The invention provides structure to surround a payload and absorbs acoustic energy so that the noise is suppressed to acceptable levels and the payload is not damaged. The fairing comprises a two dimensional honeycomb core having composite face sheets and load skins bonded to each side of the core. A water barrier is connected to the inner side of the fairing to prevent moisture from entering the payload area. The fairing may include an energy absorbing blanket connected to the inner side of the fairing to further suppress the energy generated by a launch vehicle.

Apparatus and method for controlling tension of one or more fiber tows (4) preferably including a support frame having a spool holder (36), a motor (42) for driving the spool holder, a dancer arm (50) having a free end with a redirect roller (68) mounted thereon and a fixed end pivotally mounted to coact with an angular-position sensor (56), a low-friction pneumatic cylinder (58) mounted to the dancer arm (50) and a support plate to exert a force thereon, a second redirect roller mounted to coact with a second angular-position sensor (66), and a controller (18) and associated circuitry to control the tension of the fiber by controlling the motor in response to the position of the dancer arm. Preferably, a microcontroller mounted on a single printed circuit board (PCB) having signal buffering circuitry to control a plurality of individual tensioners (22) is provided. The PCB preferably plugs into a backplane which allows communication between several microcontrollers, thereby allowing the control of at least 32 individual tensioners. Communication between a fiber placement machine main, or master, controller (18) and each tensioner controller is also provided. The second angular position sensor (68) coacting with its respective redirect roller provides fiber speed, allowing better control of the dancer position, estimation of current spool diameter to better track fiber usage, and to detect any malfunctions in fiber travel.

The arcuate surface and interfacing surface portions define a closure module chamber and have peripheral edges. The arcuate surface portion of one of the closure modules abuts contiguously against an interfacing surface portion of an adjacent one of the closure modules. The closure modules are particularly useful for use with multi-cell tanks and vessel bodies, especially tanks and vessels suitable for storing liquid propane.

A temperature sensor is coupled to supply current cartridge temperature data to the electronics module (9). A translation mechanism (64), including a first charge coupled to the first event ignitor, moves the projectile (50) forward to increase the free volume in the cartridge. A second event ignitor (70), coupled to receive a second event ignition signal from the electronics module (9), ignites the main propellant charge on receiving the second event ignition signal from the electronics module (9), where the timing of ignition of the second event ignitor (70) is determined by the temperature performance profile and the current cartridge temperature data.

The inventive system comprises an optical sensor (100) comprising a plurality of optical detector units (104). The optical detector units (104) each produce an optical detector output signal upon illumination with optical energy. In a dual mode embodiment, the sensor may further comprise an optional rf sensor (218) which produces an rf sensor output signal. In the case of the dual mode sensor (210), the optical detector units (104) are arranged in an annulus mounted coaxially with the transreflector (318) and twist reflector (322) about the longitudinal axis of the munition. The sensor system further comprises a signal processor (248) operably associated with the optional rf sensor (218) and the optical sensor (100) to receive the rf sensor and optical detector output signals and provide a guidance signal to the guidance system.

A discriminating deceleration sensing electrical switch assembly (20) is enclosed within a munitions projectile (10) for providing an electrical circuit path between a pair of electrical contacts (212, 213) upon deceleration of the projectile being greater than a selected deceleration threshold value. The discriminating deceleration electrical switch assembly includes a switch support (30) having a bore hole (32) for holding a sperical mass or ball (40). A tactile dome switch or snap switch (100) is juxtaposed between an electrical contact assembly (200), including a pair of electrically conductive surface regions (212, 216), and the spherical mass(40). The components are arranged along the munitions firing axis (15) such that, upon sufficient deceleration along the firing axis, a force acting on the spherical mass causes the dome switch to deform and contact the conductive surface regions to provide switch closure. Electrical wiring (43, 45) leading from the electrically conductive surface regions is intended to be electriclly connected to a detonation control circuit so as to initiate detonation of the munitions. The switch may also be configured as an acceleration switch without the spherical mass and, alternatively, as a combination acceleration/deceleration switch.
