A light source is configured to emit narrow peaks at discrete spectral bands, especially primary color wavelengths, added to simulate the effect of a broadband light source. A subject is provided with a pigment, examples being certain rare earth lanthanides, with a strong absorption peak at a corresponding narrow spectral band. The pigment has a nominal hue under true broadband light. When illuminated by the narrow band source, the absorption peak eliminates the contribution of one of the primary colors, producing a distinct shift in hue of the pigmented subject. The change in hue cannot be anticipated from the appearance of illuminated subjects that lack the pigment, which remain normal. The narrow absorption peak is not noticeable under unmatched light sources or true broadband light sources, e.g., sunlight. The hue shift effect is useful for security authentication, informational and decorative applications.

This invention relates to a method for preventing a copy of document, belonging to a technical field of entire copy protection of document. In the prior art, for some important documents, specially the secret ones, the reproduction of this kind of document is usually prohibited by its owner because of the security. But the technique in the prior art can not solve the problem of preventing unauthorized reproduction. The method of the present invention is intended to embed a shading pattern under the original image of an anti-copy document, detect the marker information hidden in the anti-copy document by an application program installed in the copy device, and decide whether the document can be copied legally or not. By the method of present invention, it is possible to detect the watermark information of the anti-copy document accurately and quickly, and prevent the reproduction of the anti-copy document thoroughly. Moreover, an additional memory space is no need.

The apparatus can comprise a source operable to generate a coherent beam and a beam directing member operable to direct the coherent beam into the reading volume. The apparatus may also comprise a detector arrangement for collecting signals created by scatter of the coherent beam within the reading volume, wherein different ones of the signals relate to scatter from different parts of the reading volume, the detector arrangement having a numerical aperture greater than a predetermined minimum and a processor operable to determine a signature for an article in the reading volume from the collected signals. Use of such apparatus can be repeated whenever required to test authenticity of the article. Using this system, it has been discovered that it is essentially pointless to go to the effort and expense of making specially prepared tokens, since unique characteristics are measurable in a straightforward manner from a wide variety of every day articles.

To authenticate a solid body simply and precisely, a reference area of a paper sheet which is genuine is optically read from two different directions, and the image is recorded as a reference image. A check area of a paper sheet to be authenticated including the reference area and having a size larger than the reference area is read from two different directions with a scanner, and data on a partial area having the same as the reference area is extracted from the check data collected by the reading. For a set of the reference image and the check image optically read from the same direction, the value of the correlation with the reference image is calculated by the normalization correlation method repetitively while shifting the partial area within the check area. The maximum correlation value and the normalized score of the maximum correlation value are compared with thresholds to authenticate the paper sheet. If the paper sheet is judged to be "genuine" for the authenticiation of each set, the paper sheet is finally judged to be "genuine."
