An industrially advantageous process for preparing high-purity 3-hydroxytetrahydrofuran easily and simply, which comprises converting a 4-halo-3-hydroxybutyric acid ester into a 4-halo-1,3-butanediol by reducing the ester with a boron hydride compound and/or an aluminum hydride compound in an organic solvent incompatible with water and treating the obtained reaction mixture with an acid and water, recovering an aqueous solution containing the diol, conducting the cyclization of the diol in this aqueous solution, extracting the resulting solution with an organic solvent incompatible with water, and isolating 3-hydroxytetrahydrofuran from the extract through concentration and/or distillation.

An adamantanemethanol derivative of the invention is represented by the following formula (1), wherein R a is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group; R b is a hydrocarbon group having a carbon atom, to which carbon atom at least one hydrogen atom is bonded, at a bonding site with the adjacent carbon atom; R c , R d and R e are each a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group which may be protected by a protective group or the like; provided that a hydroxyl group protected by a protective group or the like is bonded to at least one carbon atom constituting the adamantane skeleton when R a is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and R b is a methyl group; and at least one substituent, in addition to the HO-C(R a )(R b )- group indicated in the formula (1), is bonded to the adamantane ring when one of R a and R b is a methyl group and the other is an ethyl group.

This invention relates to a novel class of halofluorinated acrylates and more particularly to chlorofluorinated or bromofluorinated acrylates characterized by a chlorofluorinated or bromofluorinated alkylene moiety with acrylate functions at both terminals. These chlorofluorinated acrylates may be photocured in the presence of a photoinitiator into transparent polymers useful as optical waveguiding materials.

The present invention relates to a method of preparing an alcohol by reducing a carboxylic acid or a derivative thereof, more particularly, a method of preparing an alcohol by a reduction reaction in the presence of a zirconium-titanium oxide catalyst. A carboxylic acid or a carboxylic acid derivative is converted into a corresponding alcohol by a reduction reaction in the presence of a zirconium-titanium oxide catalyst using an alcohol as a hydrogen source. An alcohol can be prepared in a high yield in the present invention. To be more specific, the method of the present invention can convert a higher fatty acid or a carboxylic acid derivative, which has given a corresponding alcohol in a low yield in the presence of a zirconium catalyst alone, into the corresponding alcohol in a high yield. Further, the reaction can be performed easily, and the product can be easily separated from the catalyst.

The compounds are efficient asymmetric hydrogenating agents for prochiral carbonyl containing compounds when used in single enantiomer form.
