The method of the invention is particularly suitable for the production of dimethyl disulphide or diethyl disulphide from a mixture of symmetric or asymmetric dialkyl disulphides.

A method of producing polysulfides comprising the step of adding elemental sulphur to an allicin-containing plant extract. In preferred embodiments, the plant extract is mechanically treated members of the genus Allium, especially garlic. In further preferred aspects of the invention, the plant extract and sulphur mixture is heated, and the pH is controlled to allow manipulation of the polysulfide chain length. The addition of organic bases, containing nitrogen lone pairs, allows further control of polysulfide chain length.

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von polymeren Schwefelverbindungen der Formel worin die Substituenten R1 und R2 gleich oder verschieden sind und für Wasserstoff oder Methyl stehen, n und m ganze Zahlen im Bereich von 2 bis 12 und x eine ganze Zahl im Bereich von 2 bis 500 bedeuten, wobei man (Methyl)Cyclopentadien mit Schwefel und Schwefelwasserstoff bei 100° bis 180°C in Gegenwart eines Katalysators umsetzt, wobei das Molverhältnis von Schwefel zu Schwefelwasserstoff 1:0,1 bis 1:5 und das Molverhältnis von (Methyl)Cyclopentadien zu Schwefel 1:1 bis 1:9 beträgt. Diese Schwefelverbindungen dienen als Vulkanisationsmittel für Dienkautschuke.
