A tool having a neutron source, a gamma ray detector, and a photomultiplier tube is provided. The gamma ray detector and the photomultiplier tube are at least partially surrounded by a layer of boron. The tool is used to make measurements, and the number of prompt gamma rays emitted by the boron is determined from the measurements. The number of neutrons detected may be inferred using the determined number of prompt gamma rays. The tool may also have a layer of neutron absorbing material different from boron or a layer of heavy metal at least partially surrounding the boron. The tool may be a logging tool used to delineate a porous formation and to determine its porosity. The tool may have a plurality of gamma ray detector/photomultiplier tube pairs and those pairs may be used to determine a formation hydrogen index and/or a borehole hydrogen index.

The present invention provides a flow cell that can be used to improve the linear detection range of a radio-detector. The flow cell of the present invention is simple and cost-effective to set up and provides technical advantages over methods known in the prior art, as set out in more detail hereunder. The present invention also provides a method to determine the RCP of a radioactive composition making use of said flow cell, and a HPLC system comprising said flow cell.

The method includes the steps of providing image data for constructing an image of a region of a target object, comprising the steps of: providing incident radiation from a radiation source at a target object and, via at least one detector, detecting an intensity of radiation scattered by the target object; estimating an object function indicating at least one characteristic of a region of the target object; estimating a probe function indicating at least one characteristic of the incident radiation; providing image data via an iterative process responsive to the detected intensity of radiation scattered by the target object, wherein in said iterative process each of the object function and probe function are iteratively re-estimated step by step with a running estimate of the probe function being utilised to determine a running estimate of the object function associated with the target object.
