A remotely operated submersible vehicle (21), wherein the vehicle includes flotation cells (62) to provide positive buoyancy, and the vehicle is connected to a disposable clump weight (22) of sufficient weight to overcome the positive buoyancy. The connection between the clump weight and the vehicle is by way of a cable (25) which can be wound onto and off from a drum winch (45) within the vehicle to control its height off the seabed (23). The trim of the vehicle is maintained by adjusting the horizontal position of a cable guide (43) through which the clump weight cable (22) passes, the cable guide (43) being moved longitudinally and transversely by hydraulic cylinders (47). Control signals to control and monitor the operation vehicle are provided via an umbilical cable (29) extending from a ship (76) or platform on the surface. As well as operating with the clump weight (22) on the seabed (23), the vehicle (21) can be made to operate in a "free swimming" mode by selecting a clump weight (22) which only just overcomes the positive buoyancy of the flotation cells (62), positioning the weight to provide a bow up attitude and using a vertical thrust component produced by the thrusters (48) when the vehicle is in the bow up attitude to lift the vehicle from the seabed (23).

A method of making an expanded plastics foam block section and uniting it with a prior made, or partly made, section comprising the steps of charging a mould space of which one end is defined by a surface of the prior section with expandable plastics beads, initiating the expansion and fusion of the beads to create a cohesive but largely unexpanded mass of beads, obtruding the prior section into the mould space to compress a zone of the cohesive mass adjacent to the said one end, increasing the temperature and pressure in the mould space to complete the expansion and fusion process and to compress the end zone of the prior section to bring its end substantially to its unobtruded position, lowering said pressure and temperature, and ejecting the newly made block section from the mould space. Apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.

Method and apparatus for evaluating the auditory distortions of an audio system, wherein an audio signal, whose auditory distortions are to be evaluated, is filtered by a notch filter (401) to remove its fundamental frequency, and is then fed through a primary weighting network (402) comprising three high pass filters followed by a secondary weighting network (403). The filtered, weighted signal is then amplified (404), rectified, further filtered (405), compared (406) by taking the ratio with the magnitude of original signal and finally fed to a display unit (407) to show a figure that represents auditory distortion characteristics consistent with what is actually appreciated by human auditory faculties.

5U7 A machine tool (10) for removing metal from a workpiece (20) including a laser (14) for surface heat treating of the workpiece (20). Tools which engage the workpiece (20) for metal removal are supported by a tool turret (26) which is movable along two axes with respect to the workpiece (20) to bring tools into position for metal removal. The laser beam output is connected by beam directing assembly (48), including 'a telescoping tube arrangement, to a focusing head (60) which can focus the laser beam. The focusing head (6) can be engaged and positioned by the tool turret (26). Tool turret (26) is positioned to maintain the laser beam slightly defocused on the workpiece. A coating spray nozzle (62) is positioned with the laser head (60) and is used for coating the workpiece (20) before laser heat treating. A locking mechanism is provided for locking the head (60) to the beam directing assembly (48). When not being used for heat treating the beam directing assembly, (48) along with the locked focusing head (60) is retracted to a home position. When in the home position a protective cover (90) is positioned over the beam directing assembly. The laser beam is delivered thru telescoping protective tubes by reflective mirrors, which allows the focusing head (60) and directed laser beam to follow motion of the tool turret (26). Flexible connections are provided for connecting the necessary air, water, and coating to the various beam delivery and coating members.

A hemostatic agent, method and carrier for arresting the flow of blood and other protein containing body fluids flowing from an open wound and for promoting wound healing. A broad aspect is directed to a substantially anhydrous admixture of an oxyacid salt and a hydrophilic proton donor which will hydrate in the presence of blood and body fluid to produce cations to promote blood clotting. The preferred oxyacid salts are alkali and alkaline earth salts of transition metals and halogen oxyacids with oxidizing capabilities sufficient to accelerate blood clotting. Another embodiment of the invention includes the compound containing an oxysalt plus a hydrophilic polymer such as carboxy methylcellulose, polyvinyl, alcohol, an alginate, and all soluble gums. Still another embodiment of the invention includes the compound formed of an oxyacid salt in combination with a hydrophilic proton donor and a solid desiccant which further accelerates blood coagulation reaction rates. The cation exchange material or an admixture of an alkali metal oxyacid salt plus acidic inorganic salt produces a scab or protective coating over the wound for protection and enhanced healing. Oxygen produced during the reaction substantially reduces the level of bacteria, virus and fungus at the wound. The resin is performance-enhanced for greater fluid uptake and more rapid coagulation.
