A process for preparing lower alkyl-halides from the reaction of HX and the corresponding lower alcohol, wherein X represents a halogen atom, comprises continuously feeding HX and a lower alcohol to a reactor maintaining the instantaneous molar ratio of HX to the alcohol greater than 3, and continuously distilling off lower alkyl-halide and water from the reactor, continuously separating the lower alkyl-halide and water and recycling part of the said water to the distillation column to abate HX distillation from the reactor. High acid concentrations and temperatures are maintained to obtain high yields and rapid conversion of alkanols.

The present invention relates to flame retardant polymer compositions possessing non-linear structural configurations. According to the invention, a preformed backbone polymer, selected from polyolefins or styrenic polymers or copolymer thereof, is reacted with a flame retardant reagent selected from tribromophenoxy- or pentabromophenoxy ethyl ester or acrylic or methacrylic acid. The non-linear structural configuration is a result from the grafting or crosslinking of the ester with the polymer. The preferred amounts of the flame retardant reagent in the polymer compositions are between 10% to 50% by weight of the compositions. The flame retardant reagents are characterized by their thermostability at high temperatures. Optionally synergistic fire retardant additives such as antimony oxide are incorporated in the compositions. The flame retardant ethylene-propylene rubber compositions were found to possess improved properties with a V-O rating, being completely absent of any blooming effect.

Granular flame retardant agents are disclosed which incorporate halogenated organic flame-retardant compounds, without any binders. The granular agents may further contain desired additives and organic or inorganic flame-retardant synergistic materials. The granular agents are dust-free and are usefully employed in a method for imparting flame-retardant properties to flamable plastic materials. A process for the preparation of the granular flame retardant agents of the invention by cold compaction is also described.
