Systems and methods for collecting cellular-rich concentrates of blood are disclosed. Blood from donor (78) is mixed with anticoagulant (90) and conveyed to a first separation device (12) for separating an anticoagulated cellular suspension from blood. The anticoagulated cellular suspension is conveyed to a second separation device (14) for removing leukocytes. Leukocyte-depleted cellular suspension is conveyed to a third separation device (16) for concentrating the leukocyte-depleted cellular suspension into a cellular-rich concentrate and a cellular-poor component and a portion of the cellular-poor component is returned to the donor (78). A controller (88) is used to control the process including monitoring the rate at which anticoagulant carried in the cellular-poor component is being infused with the returned cellular-poor component into the donor (78).

Whole blood is separated in a separation chamber (12) into a red blood cell layer (RBC) and a platelet rich plasma (PRP) layer. A portion of the PRP layer is conveyed along an outlet path (108) to a leukocyte filter (14), which removes leukocytes from the PRP. The remaining portion of the PRP is conveyed along a bypass path (112), which bypasses the filter (14), to be mixed with the whole blood being conveyed to the separation chamber (12). A controller (88) controls flow in the bypass path (112) to maintain a predetermined surface hematocrit of the blood entering the separation chamber (12). The arrangement improves RBC/PRP separation and improves leukocyte removal by the filter (14).

In resuspension mode, a volume of retained PPP is returned through the PPP collection port (44) into the second compartment (26) to mix with and resuspend leukocyte-depleted platelet concentrate (LDPC) in the second compartment (26). During the resuspension period, a rotor (28) slowly oscillates the second compartment (26) first in one rotational direction and then in an opposite rotational direction. The oscillation creates variable agitation forces that aid the mixing and resuspension process within the second compartment (26).

A centrifugal oil filter for removing contaminant particles from a pressurized fluid medium includes a cylindrical drum concentric with and fixedly secured to a rotational shaft, with an annular disc being disposed within and rotatable with the drum. The disc is centered within the drum and spaced from the internal circumferential surface of the drum so as to partition the drum into two radial passageways interconnected at said internal circumferential surface. The latter is of irregular configuration to define an annular collection zone for collecting contaminant particles centerfuged outwardly by rotation of said drum. Pressurized fluid medium is provided to one radial passageway, flows past the annular collection zone where the contaminant particles are centerfuged and entrapped in the irregular internal circumferential surface of the drum, after which the pressurized fluid medium is forced radially inwardly through the other radial passageway and out of the centrifugal oil filter.

Auf den oberen, aus der Kammer (1) herausragenden Anschlußteil (81) des Blutbeutels ist ein Halterungsteil (64) aufgeschoben, das ein Umknicken der Anschlußschläuche während des Zentrifugiervorganges verhindert.
