In its more particular aspects, the invention relates to the field of composites that may be widely tailored for many different treatment applications.

A method using microelements in natural minerals for changing property of a material provides basic materials of Granite and Magnet to mix with other natural minerals of Zeolite, Light stone, Malachit, and limestone, a metal of Silver, and other materials of Coal and Charcoal as a new material. The mixed ingredients in the new material can be arranged to have different mixed proportions according to the purpose, aspect, and function for changing property of the treated material. An ideal mixing proportion for the new material is that 70∼80% weight fraction of Granite, 10∼15% weight fraction of Magnet, 6∼8% weight fraction of Charcoal, 3∼10% weight fraction of Zeolite, 0∼3% weight fraction of Silver, and 0∼2% weight fraction of Coal. Specifically, the most ideal mixing proportion thereof is 75% weight fraction of Granite, 12% weight fraction of Magnet, 6% weight fraction of Charcoal, 4% weight fraction of Zeolite, 2% weight fraction of Silver, and 1% weight fraction of Coal.

A process is disclosed for the production of bentonite-based sorbents for the absorption of liquids. The process is characterized by the mixing together, compaction and crushing of the following ingredients: (a) a bentonite with a water content of less than 6 wt. %; (b) a moist pulp of fibrous cellulose and inorganic pigments produced in the treatment of waste water from paper manufacturing; (c) anhydrous calcium sulphate or calcium sulphate semihydrate. The relative proportions of bentonite (a), moist pulp (b) and calcium sulphate (c) are selected to ensure that the water content (free water) of the granular material is less than 20 wt. %.

Effluents containing residual dyes are contacted with an effective amount of hydrotalcite-like material together with an effective amount of a magnesium salt or a mixture of magnesium salts, the weight ratio (on dry basis) of hydrotalcite-like material to magnesium salt being in the range of 20:1 to 1:20. Residual dyes are removed from effluents.
