The invention relates to a method for detecting actuation gestures performed by a user to access a vehicle function and for individually calibrating the detection for a user. In the method according to the invention, the signals of at least two sensor arrays are monitored. A first of said sensor arrays is monitored until said first sensor array receives a characteristic signal response s1. Then the second sensor array is monitored until the second sensor array detects a second characteristic signal s2. The time t1 when the first signal s1 is detected in the first sensor array and the time t2 when the second signal s2 is detected in the second sensor array are stored. Finally, additional signal responses are queried. First, the second sensor array is monitored once again until the second sensor array can once again pick up a characteristic signal response s3. An associated time t3 is stored. Finally, the first sensor array is monitored until the first sensor array queries a characteristic signal response s4, and the associated time is also stored as time value t4.
