A method in an Internet Protocol (IP) telecommunications network of establishing a conference call between a first user as a conference owner and a plurality of other users as conference participants, said network including a conference server and at least one Serving Call State Control Function (S-CSCF) providing call control functions for the users, said method comprising: registering with a first S-CSCF serving the first user, the first user as the conference owner; identifying the conference participants to the first S-CSCF; identifying by the first S-CSCF, each participant's assigned S-CSCF; sending a request from the first S-CSCF to each participant's S-CSCF requesting each S-CSCF to notify the first S-CSCF when a predefined criterion for initiating the conference call has been met by the participant being served by the participant's S-CSCF; detecting by each participant's S-CSCF, when each participant has met the predefined criterion; sending a notification from each participant's S-CSCF to the first S-CSCF when each participant being served by the participant's S-CSCF has met the predefined criterion; determining by the first S-CSCF whether the participants have met the predefined criterion for initiating the conference call; and instructing the conference server to initiate the conference call upon determining that the participants have met the predefined criterion.

A software suite for enabling and managing a conference hosted on a network for communication has, a client application serving as a user interface for configuring a conference and for receiving notification thereof, a parent application including a server component for managing conference settings and for serving notifications and alerts related to a scheduled conference, and a conference bridging application for physically bridging incoming communications into an active conference in session. In a preferred embodiment the software suite controls both telephony apparatus and data-network apparatus including a Groupware system to enable seamless conferencing using more than one type of communications device and more than one type of synchronous media.

The invention relates to a method of setting up conference calling in a communications system. In the method, at least one subscriber group having two or more subscribers is established in a server connected to the communications system; subscribers registered in the set up group chat with each other by messages in such a manner that the server in the communications system receives a message of a subscriber participating in the message chat and transmits it on to other subscribers belonging to the group in question. In the method, it is also possible to move from message chatting to conference calling by one of the subscribers in the subscriber group sending a pre-defined message to the server, which message acts as a signal to the server to move to conference calling; the server sets up a conference call between the subscribers registered as active in the subscriber group in response to receiving said pre-defined message.

In a multimedia communications system, a conference establishment server coordinates the scheduling of a conference call. The server receives request for conference calls (202). The request includes a list of participants and may include an indication of the resources necessary and any rules for the conference call. The request may indicate critical resources or participants that are required for the call. Based on the request, the server determines a conference time and notifies participants of the time (204, 206, 210). Prior to conference time, participants are reminded of the time and automatically connected to the call. The server may check the status of users on the telecommunications network to determine availability. If a critical participant or resource is unavailable at conference time, the conference may be cancelled with notification to the participants.

A group call server supplies communications terminals of a certain type with an indication of call type, and optionally other information, for group calls so as to distinguish such calls from other types of calls. The group call server in charge of the group call may selectively augment the calling party number field of the outgoing paging message with one or more indicator flags when the targeted communications terminal is adapted to receive and act upon such information. The indicator flags indicate one or more characteristics of the group call, such as call type, call subtype, or priority level. One flag may indicate priority level and another may indicate the call subtype of the group call. The communications terminals receiving the augmented paging message will base their response, such as to auto-answer or not, on the group call characteristics indicated in the paging message. The group call server may rely on already built-in flexibility in existing signaling and air interface protocols so that the method disclosed herein may be implemented without the need to change the air interface of the BMI.

One of the system embodiments includes a database (220) and a switching center (205,215).
