A refractory roll cover is described that reduces the amount of noxious dust during the production of glass sheet. The roll cover comprises a plurality of segments, including low dusting millboard segments mechanically supported by highly rigidized compressed fiber segments. The millboard segments are adapted to contact the glass sheet. The millboard is chosen so that any dust produced has little affinity for the glass sheet or is not easily fluidized by convective currents. The highly rigidized compressed fiber has a fused surface that releases little dust. The resultant roll cover substantially eliminates dusting while providing a mechanically superior roll cover.

An insulating roll is provided which is constructed with a roll body formed of a plurality of inorganic material-derived discs (6) laminated with each other and positioned axially of and around a metal conduit (1), and a heat-resistant metal tube (7) disposed integrally over an outer periphery of the roll body. The discs (6) do not consist of metal. A tubular cover formed by spray coating a ceramic material on the heat-resistant metal tube (7), or a sintered ceramics-made sleeve may be disposed, where desired, in place of the heat-resistant metal tube. This roll has low thermal conductivity and high impact strength without involving reduced surface temperature of a material being heat treated in a furnace, or reduced ambient temperature in the furnace during heat treatment.
