Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zum Betrieb einer Geschirrspülmaschine (1), die im Spülraum (3) ihres wenigstens einen herausziehbaren Aufnahmebehälters (2) mindestens eine von einer Pumpe (8) mit Spülflüssigkeit versorgte, mit Sprühöffnungen (5) versehene Sprüheinrichtung (6) aufweist, durch welche Sprühöffnungen (5) die Spülflüssigkeit in den Spülraum (3) versprüht wird. Ein leichtes Erkennen von Verstopfungen der Sprühöffnungen (5) wird erfindungsgemäß dadurch erreicht, dass auch bei herausgezogenem Aufnahmebehälter (2) die Pumpe (8) eingeschaltet und Spülflüssigkeit zugeführt werden kann, wobei jedoch gleichzeitig die Durchflussmenge der Spülflüssigkeit durch die Sprühöffnungen (5) soweit reduziert wird, dass kein Abspritzen von Spülflüssigkeit aus dem offenen Spülraum (3) nach außen in die freie Umgebung erfolgt.
