A system, apparatus and method for detecting defects in a honeycomb body. The system and apparatus include a fixture adapted to hold the honeycomb body, a particulate fluid source, a pipe which defines a flow path between the particulate fluid source and a first end face of the honeycomb body thereby allowing particulate fluid to flow from the particulate fluid source to the first end face of the honeycomb body. The particulate fluid emerges at a second end face of the honeycomb body through defects, if any, in the honeycomb body where the positions of such defects may be monitored. The system and apparatus includes a flow straightener disposed in the flow path to minimize boundary layer influence of the pipe on the flow of the particulate fluid. A substantially uniform velocity flow profile is provided to the first end face of the honeycomb body.

An inspection method for detecting a defect of an object, if any, comprises producing fine particles, causing the fine particles to enter the object, and allowing a high-directivity light beam to pass near the object so as to irradiate the fine particles emerging from the object with the light beam to visualize and detect a defect, if any. Also disclosed is an inspection device for detecting a defect of an object, if any, comprises fine particle producing means for producing fine particles, fine particle directing means for causing the fine particles to enter the object, and light emitting means for emitting a high-directivity light so that the light beam may pass near the object and irradiate the fine particles passing through and emerging from the object so as to visualize the fine particles. It is possible to detect a defect of the object sensitively, if any, to locate and record the place of the defect easily and to shorten or eliminate the inspection time and the pre- and post-process times before and after the inspection.

There is provided a honeycomb structure which is excellent in such a resistance to thermal shock as to prevent generation of cracks or dissolved losses in partition wall intersections as critical damages for a filter and which is capable of securing a sufficient bonding strength to partition walls even in a case where plugging portions have a high porosity. A honeycomb structure includes: porous partition walls arranged to define cells connecting two end faces to each other; and plugging portions arranged to plug the cells in either end face. A porosity of each plugging portion is 50 to 90%, and an area of pores each having a sectional area of 0.15 mm 2 or more is 30% or more of a total pore area, the sectional area occupying an arbitrary section including a central axis of the plugging portion.

The shape-measuring device includes rollers 31 provided corresponding to the rows of segments and displaced to follow unevenness of an end face 1a of the object while being rotated on the end face 1a due to the relative movement, detection means 35 provided corresponding to each roller 31 and detecting the amount of displacement of each roller 31, and calculation means 37 for calculating shape data of the object 1 based on the amount of displacement of the roller 31 detected by the detection means 35. The shape-measuring device 1 can accurately and promptly measure the shape of the object such as a DPF in which segments are bonded in rows.

There are disclosed an exhaust emission control system including an internal combustion engine, a filter, and an exhaust pipe, a method of manufacturing a filter suitable for the system, and a method of calculating a pressure loss. The system comprises combustion means for intermittently burning particulate matters arrested by the filter, the filter includes porous partition walls extending from one end face to the other end face thereof, and a large number of through channels partitioned by the partition walls, predetermined through channels are sealed at either of the end faces, and assuming that a partition wall thickness is (X) µm, and the number of through channels per unit area in a cross section vertical to a longitudinal direction of the through channels is (Y) cells/cm 2 , X and Y come within a range surrounded by straight lines connecting points A1, B1, C1, and D1 in this order in FIG. 1 in the exhaust emission control system. There are provided the exhaust emission control system, the method of manufacturing the filter, and the method of calculating the pressure loss by the filter with good accuracy in which a temperature gradient produced in the filter at the time of regeneration is suppressed while suppressing a rise of the pressure loss by the filter and which are accordingly superior in reliability.
