An injection blow molding machine which has an injection molding station (22), a 1st transfer unit (24), a cooling station (26), a heating station (30), a 2nd transfer unit (32) and a plurality of blow forming stations (34). The injection molding station (22) injection-molds M rows of preforms (36). Each row of preforms (36) comprises N preforms and extends in a direction B perpendicular to the direction in which the preforms (36) are transferred. In the 1st transfer unit (24), M rows of the preforms (36) molded by the injection molding station (22) are taken out by a take-out mechanism (102) in erected postures while the intervals between the rows are narrowed. Further, the pitches between the columns are changed and the postures of the preforms (36) are inverted by an inverting mechanism (104) and the preforms (36) are transferred in inverted postures. The cooling station (26) and the heating station (30) cool and heat the N preforms (36) in one row while they are conveyed in parallel with each other along a 1st conveyance passage (200). The 2nd transfer unit (32) transfers the preforms (36) to two blow forming stations (34) while the preforms (36) are kept in the inverted postures. N/2 preforms (36) are subjected to stretching blow forming by each of the blow forming stations (34) to form vessels.

Kopfstation (I) und der Blasstation (II) rechtwinklig zur Verbindungslinie der nebeneinanderliegend angeordneten Kavitäten bzw. Formnester ausgeführt wird. A one-piece blow-molded closed plastic drum (10) having an integrally-formed compression-molded handling ring (20) and method of molding same is provided. The drum (10) has structural strength and stability to resist breakage of the drum upon impact due to tipping or dropping of the drum. The drum (10) includes a generally cylindrical body portion (12) and a head portion (15) integrally-molded with an upper end of the body portion (12) including a transition area (17) around and between the upper end of the body portion (12) and a top (16) of the drum in the head portion (15). The transition area (17) has an outside curved surface (17a) of a predetermined radius (B) so that an outside surface (12a) of the body portion (12) is positioned in a tangential plane (E) in close proximity to a tangential plane (E') along the outer circumferential surface (22a) of the handling ring (20) and/or an inside curved surface (17b) with at least one radius, preferably a double ogee with three predetermined radii (F,G,H), so that no acute angles are formed between inside surfaces at the transition area (17).

The invention aims at enabling inexpensive manufacture of a preform carrying mechanism of a simple construction for a blow molding apparatus for biaxial stretching of hollow moldings such as PET bottles from preforms. The molding apparatus is provided with a linear carrying line for carrying preforms (P), and the carrying line comprises a beam (81), on which a multiplicity of carrying members (82) are supported, a carrying mechanism (83) and a lifting mechanism (84) for the beam. The carrying members (82) on the beam are repeatedly moved back and forth at a constant feed pitch by means of the mechanisms. A preform grasping/releasing mechanism (85) is actuated in synchronism with the movement so that while the respective carrying members (82) are moved backward, preforms are temporarily stopped, and when the respective carrying members (82) are caused to advance from backward positions, the preforms P are delivered to the respective carrying members (82). Since the preforms P can be carried along the carrying line only by moving the beam (81), which supports thereon the multiplicity of carrying members (82), forward and backward at a constant pitch, the carrying mechanism of a simple construction can be inexpensively manufactured.

In an apparatus for manufacturing thermally set plastic vessels according to the present invention, a metal mold which is heated to and kept at a heat setting temperature is used, and a hot air supply and discharge passage communicating with a preform is provided between the outer circumferential surface of a stretching rod and a mandrel, a cold air supply passage, which communicates with the interior of the preform, being provided in the interior of the stretching rod. A hot air supply and discharge mechanism and a cold air supply mechanism are provided in these passages via switch valves or change-over valves. According to the present invention, the hot air is supplied to the interior of the preform simultaneously with the starting of a preform stretch-blow molding operation, to carry out the stretch-blow molding and heat setting of the preform with the above-mentioned valves controlled suitably. After the preform has been heat set, the hot air is discharged, and the cold air is then supplied to cool the molded vessel. According to this invention, the stretch-blow molding of a preform, the heat setting of a molded vessel, and the cooling of the heat set vessel for the purpose of taking out the same from the mold are carried out in a single metal mold as a sequence of operations without a loss of time.

A double-walled plastic box 20 is molded from a single parison 50 in an unlimited depth by closing and holding a bottom region of the parison at the bottom of a cavity 30, bringing together parts of a core 40 above the cavity to close off an upper region of the parison, moving the core, the cavity, or both vertically to position the core within the cavity and invert the parison so that a lower region of the parison forms an outside wall of the box against an inside surface of the cavity and an upper region of the parison forms an inside wall of the box against an outer surface of the core. The parison is then blown into a double-walled box 20 in the shape of an enclosed space between the cavity and the core.
