Additives for electrophoretic media comprising esters of branched polyols and fatty acids, such as esters of pentaerythritol propoxylate (5/4 PO/OH) and stearic acid. The fatty acids may be saturated or unsaturated, branched or unbranched. In some embodiments, the fatty acids are perfluorinated, or partially fluorinated. In some embodiments, the branched polyol will include oligomers of polypropylene oxide or polyethylene oxide. When the additives are included in an electrophoretic medium in a display, the resulting display has an improved contrast ratio and reducing ghosting.

A method for the preparation of treprostinil and its derivatives is described. In contrast to prior art, this method utilizes an easily scalable enzymatic resolution of a key intermediate for making these compounds. Another significant improvement of the described method over prior methods is the regioselective Claisen rearrangement of a 5-allyloxy-benzaldehyde precursor, which is facilitated by a bromo substituent in 2-position.

A method for producing triacetin from one or more plants of genus Nicotiana is provided. The triacetin can be derived inter alia from Nicotiana species biomass or from seed. In certain embodiments, the triacetin is produced by condensation of glycerin, generated by hydrolysis of acylglycerol-containing starting material derived from tobacco biomass or seed, and acetic acid, also derived from tobacco biomass or seed. The invention also provides articles and compositions including tobacco articles and tobacco compositions that include triacetin produced from one or more plants of genus Nicotiana.

The present invention concerns an optimized process to obtain a mixture of lower carboxylic acid mono, di and triesters, from raw glycerin, a by-product of the process to obtain biodiesel, a transesterification of vegetable raw material with lower alcohols. The invention particularly refers to an optimized process to obtain triacetin or a mixture of mono-, di- and triacetin from that raw glycerin, without prior purification.
