In effecting the stretching by using a stretch rod in a method of producing a biaxially stretched polyester bottle, the air is blown into the preform at such a flow rate that the preform does not come in contact with the stretch rod but the end thereof and does not come in contact with the surfaces of the mold, either. There can be produced a biaxially stretched polyester bottle having an average thickness of about 0.05 to about 0.2 mm or having a further decreased thickness using a resin in decreased amounts and having a decreased weight without developing burst or whitening caused by over-stretching, without forming ring-like thick portion yet maintaining a good yield and efficiency.

A container is made from a preform comprising a PET Copolymer comprising a diol component having repeat units from ethylene glycol and a non-ethylene glycol diol component and a diacid component having repeat units from terephthalic acid and a non-terephthalic acid diacid component. The total amount of non-ethylene glycol diol component and non-terephthalic acid diacid component is present in the poly(ethylene terephthalate) copolymer in an amount ftom about 0.2 mole percent to less than 2.2 mole percent. The container is useful in packaging beverages and corresponding methods are disclosed.

Precrystallizing an amorphous crystallizable thermoplastic article, such as an amorphous polyethylene terephthalate article, by heating to thermally induce crystallinity, then orienting at a temperature that is preferably greater than the crystallizing temperature, provides articles having substantially improved thermal dimensional stability together with high tensile modulus properties. The process is particularly useful in the production of containers suitable for use in hot-fill applications.

This invention relates to articles made of polyester (1), preferably polyethylene terephthalate (PET), having coated directly (80, 82) to at least one of the surfaces thereof one or more layers of thermoplastic material with good gas-barrier characteristics, and novel methods of making such articles. Preferably the barrier-coated articles take the form of preforms coated by at least one layer of barrier material and the containers blow-molded therefrom. Such barrier-coated containers are preferably of the type to hold beverages such as soft drinks, beer or juice. The preferred barrier materials have a lower permeability to oxygen and carbon dioxide than PET as well as key physical properties similar to PET. The materials and methods provide that the barrier layers have good adherence to PET, even during and after the blow molding process to form containers from preforms. Preferred barrier coating materials include poly(hydroxyamino ethers). In one preferred method, preforms are injection molded then barrier-coated immediately thereafter.

The present invention relates to a polyester polymer composition containing graphite in the range of about 3-60 parts per million based on the polyester. The size of the graphite particles is greater than about 0.5µm. As an upper limit, however, any particle size which is not visible to the naked eye is acceptable. Such polyester polymers having graphite incorporated therein absorb infrared radiation better than polymers containing no graphite and thus in the production of plastic bottles less energy is required to heat the preform so that it can be blow molded into a bottle.
