A molten alloy was pressure-solidified under a pressure exceeding one atmospheric pressure to eliminate casting defects. The molten alloy was solidified by applying a cooling rate difference to the surface and the interior of the molten alloy to allow a compressive stress layer to remain on the surface of the amorphous alloy ingot and a tensile stress layer in the interior portion. Thus, a amorphous alloy sheet having a thickness of 1 mm or more and excellent in bending strength and impact strength is obtained.

The forming die has a forming die body in a square barrel shape, and there are a lot of through holes (22) provided between mount surfaces (25) and inner side surfaces (26) of the forming die body. Grooves (23) communicating with the through holes (22) are provided in the mount surfaces (25). When a molten metal is injected into the cavity, the through holes of the forming die body form outwardly projecting portions of a cast product. The forming die is then melted to be removed from the cast product.

This invention relates to an improved method of manufacturing a heater nozzle for an injection molding system. The heater nozzle has a helical heating element which is cast into an outer portion around an inner liner through which the melt flows. The outer portion is formed of a conductive material such as a beryllium copper alloy and the inner liner is formed of a durable corrosion resistant material such as stainless steel to provide an excellent combination of these characteristics. The heater nozzle is made by positioning the heating element around a pre-heated solid threaded liner in a mold and pressure casting the beryllium copper outer portion around them. The elongated liner is very accurately located in the mold by having the lower end received in a seat in the mold and the upper end received in an aperture through the plunger as it closes. In another embodiment, the inner liner is provided with a Y-shaped joint by attaching an arm portion to it by brazing them in a vacuum furnace prior to the pressure casting step. After pressure casting, the liner is then drilled to form the melt passage through it and the heater nozzle is machined to remove the projecting ends of the liner and to finish the outside according to predetermined dimensions.

Apparatus for casting of low-density metals, such as magnesium alloys, into an air-permeable mold includes a housing (11) forming a substantially airtight chamber (30) in which is disposed a mold assembly (40) including a mold secured between top and bottom plates (47, 41) by encircling bands or straps (49). A bottom-discharge reservoir vessel (70) for molten metal is disposed above the mold, the vessel outlet communicating with the mold inlet through a coupling against which the mold assembly is resiliently urged by bias means to insure an airtight coupling. A valve means (95) is selectively operable for opening and closing the vessel outlet and closure means cooperates with the vessel (70) for providing a substantially airtight closure thereof. Pressure control means (33, 35, 66, 68;) is coupled to the vessel (70) and the chamber (30) for establishing a pressure differential therebetween which cooperates with gravity to urge the molten metal from the vessel into the mold when the valve (95) is open. Two embodiments are disclosed, one in which the vessel (70) is disposed within a separate airtight chamber (51) above the mold chamber (30), and another in which the vessel (70) is closed by an airtight cover plate. Means are provided for opening and closing the vessel and chambers to provide access to the interiors thereof.
