Provided is a binder for secondary battery electrodes wherein the content of a gel comprising a polymer particle obtained by copolymerizing three or more types of monomers is 50 to 100% by weight and a swelling index of the binder to an electrolyte is 1.1 to 5.0. The binder fundamentally improves electrode stability due to the gel content defined above and increases ionic conductivity due to the swelling index, thus providing secondary batteries with superior cycle properties.

Disclosed are a maleimide-α-alkylstyrene-based, heat-resistant bulk tetrapolymer and a preparation process thereof. More specifically, disclosed are a bulk tetrapolymer, comprising 5-60 wt % of an N-substituted maleimide monomer, 10-70 wt % of an a-alkylstyrene monomer, 5-50 wt % of an unsaturated nitrile monomer and 3-50 wt % of an aromatic vinyl monomer, as well as a continuous bulk polymerization process for preparing the same. The disclosed bulk tetrapolymer has a weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of 70,000-300,000 and a glass transition temperature of 150-200°C, shows excellent high-temperature thermal stability and heat resistance and a remarkably low melt viscosity, and thus is excellent not only in processability, but also in productivity, processability, moldability and blendability, when it is blended with other resins. Also, the continuous bulk polymerization process is equipped with a devolatilizer and enables the bulk tetrapolymer to be produced at low cost and high efficiency.

An apparatus for manufacturing a polymer resin comprises a polymerization vessel, a bearing part, a protection part, a circulating cooling means, a raw material-injecting nozzle and a flow path-constituting part. The protection part forms a first flow path between the protection part and the side face of the agitation axis. The circulating cooling means includes a circulating inlet nozzle provided on a side face of the protruding part so as to be opposite to the protection part. The flow path-constituting part is provided between the bearing part and the protection part so as to cover the side face of the agitation axis, to fix the bearing part and the protection part. This flow path-constituting part forms a second flow path between the side face of the agitation axis and the flow path-constituting part and a third flow path for coupling the second flow path with the raw material-injecting nozzle. The first to third flow paths constitute a continuous flow path and an uppermost end of the first flow path is opened to the inside of the protruding part. The gap, part of the first flow path other than the uppermost end, the second flow path and the third flow path are isolated from the inside of the protruding part.

The invention relates to copolymers of unsaturated monomers, devoid of rubber, which are selected from the group of styrenes and vinyl cyanides. Said copolymers contain between 65 and 80 % by weight, preferably between 68 and 77 % by weight styrene and between 20 and 35 % by weight, preferably between 23 and 32 % by weight acryl nitrile. The invention also relates to a method and a device for producing said copolymers. A mild, two-stage evaporation treatment allows copolymers with few residual monomers, namely less than 20, preferably 10 ppm of acryl nitrile, less than 200, preferably 100 ppm of styrene and less than 200, preferably 100 ppm of ethyl benzole to be obtained. In addition, in a first stage of a mild concentration process, solutions of the product are reduced to concentrations greater than/or equal to 99.8 % by the supply of energy and simultaneous evaporation and additional monomers are then eliminated in a second stage, without intermediate heating.

In manufacturing a thermoplastic copolymer by copolymerizing an aromatic vinyl monomer, a vinyl cyanide monomer, and, when necessary, a vinyl monomer (a) copolymerizable with the above two monomers, at least a part or all of the vinyl cyanide monomer is put in a reactor and copolymerizing reaction is started, and a weight of an unreacted portion of the aromatic vinyl monomer is caused to become greater than a weight of an unreacted portion of the vinyl cyanide monomer when all the monomer components are put in the reactor. By doing so, a ratio of the vinyl cyanide monomer in a structural unit of a thermoplastic copolymer produced at latter stages of the copolymerizing reaction is lowered. Thus, the present invention is capable of providing a thermoplastic copolymer which has excellent physical properties such as good heat resistance and good mechanical strength and is hard to discolor, as well as a manufacturing method thereof.
