The invention provides a dispersant viscosity modifier, and more specifically a metal free dispersant viscosity modifier. The invention provides compositions, including lubricating compositions containing the described dispersant viscosity modifier, such as heavy duty diesel lubricating compositions. The invention further relates to the use of the described dispersant viscosity modifier to improve the film thickness and/or antiwear performance of a lubricating composition, for example, a heavy duty diesel lubricating composition. The improved dispersant viscosity modifier of the invention is specially designed to protect against valve train and other crankcase wear in lubricating applications, including heavy soot conditions such as heavy duty diesel lubricating applications.

The invention relates to thermal conversion products comprised of maleic anhydride and oligoalkenes which can be obtained by the oligomerization of linear C8- to C12-1-alkenes, preferably in the presence of a titanium, zirconium or hafnium-metallocene catalyst and in the presence of an activator based on organoaluminum, organoboron or carbocationic compounds. Said conversion products comprise a vinylidene double bond portion of over 30 % and a numerical mean molecular weight ranging from 1,000 to 20,000. The invention also relates to derivatives of the thermal conversion products with amines or alcohols and to the use of said derivatives as fuel and lubricant additives.

Oil-soluble dispersant additives are disclosed. The additives comprise the reaction product of a functionalized 1-butene copolymer and at least one nucleophilic reactant selected from amines, amino alcohols, alcohols, and reactive metal compounds. The functionalized copolymer has within its structure at least one acyl functional group selected from the group consisting of C4 to C10 dicarboxylic acids and derivatives thereof and C3 to C10 monocarboxylic acids and derivatives thereof. The 1-butene copolymer is derived from 1-butene and at least one other alpha -olefin of formula CH2=CHR', wherein R' is methyl or a C3 to C12 linear or branched alkyl group. The copolymer has a number average molecular weight of at least about 700, a molecular weight distribution of less than 5, and ethenylidene groups terminating at least about 30% of all polymer chains. The dispersant additives are useful in oleaginous compositions including lubricating oil compositions and concentrates and fuel compositions.
