A lubricating oil composition comprising oil, and an additive combination comprising a poly alpha-olefin polymer dispersant with a number average molecular weight above 2500, and a metal dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate sufficient to yield a phosphorous content of up to 0.1 percent weight based on the total weight of the oil. The poly alpha-olefin polymer can be ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer such as ethylene-1-butene or ethylene-1-butene-hydrocarbyl polyamine. Preferably, the ethylene-1-butene-hydrocarbyl polyamine has a number average molecular weight of about 3300.

The invention relates to a method for producing polyalkenyl succinimide products, especially polyisobutenyl succinimide products, wherein a polyalkene is reacted with maleic acid, maleic acid hydride or a functional derivative therefrom to form polyalkenyl succinate hydride and, subsequently, the polyalkenyl succinate hydride is reacted with a oligo- or polyamine. Said polyalkenyl succinate hydride is reacted with (a) firstly, an alcohol or phenol without isolating the reaction products thereof, then it is reacted with the oligoamine or polyamine, or (b) the polyalkenyl succinate hydride is reacted in the presence of an alcohol or phenol with the oligoamine or polyamine and, (c) if desired, the alcohol or the phenol is subsequently removed. The invention also relates to novel polyalkenyl succinimide products, especially polyisobutenyl succinimine products, and fuel additives.

A composition for reducing the copper-lead bearing corrosion of an engine that includes a major amount of an oil of lubrication viscosity and a minor amount of a corrosion-reducing additive comprising (A) a borated dispersant with a total base number of from 20 to 160 on an oil-free basis, selected from Mannich dispersants, succinimide dispersants or olefin-carboxylic/carboxylate dispersants; (B) a metal salt of a phosphorus acid; and (C) a metal overbased composition comprising at least one carboxylate, phenate, or sulfonate wherein the metal is lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium or calcium, and (D) a borate ester. The borated ester and borated dispersant provide from 20 to about 800 parts per million (ppm) mass of boron in the composition.

The invention provides dispersants and dispersant viscosity index improvers which include polymers of conjugated dienes which have been hydrogenated, functionalized, optionally modified, and post treated. The dispersant substances include a copolymer of two different conjugated dienes. The polymers are selectively hydrogenated to produce polymers which have highly controlled amounts of unsaturation, permitting highly selective functionalization. The polymers may be blended with lower molecular weight components. Also provided are lubricant fluids, such as mineral and synthetic oils, which have been modified in their dispersancy and/or viscometric properties by means of the dispersant substances of the invention. Also provided are methods of modifying the dispersancy and/or viscometric properties of lubricating fluids such as mineral and synthetic lubricating oils. The dispersant substances may also include a carrier fluid to provide dispersant concentrates.
