A vehicle brake system (10) includes a master cylinder (12) having a housing defining a bore therein. A boost piston (26) and a primary piston (28) are slidably disposed in the bore (30). The master cylinder (12) has a boost chamber (34) defined at least in part by the boost piston (26) and the housing. The system further includes a source of pressurized fluid and a boost valve (32) operable to supply fluid from the source of pressurized fluid to the boost chamber (34) for advancing the boost piston (26) and the primary piston (28) in the master cylinder (12). According to one aspect of the invention, the boost valve (32) is housed in the boost piston (26). According to another aspect of the invention, the brake system includes a switchable travel rate feature. A piston assembly is provided which detects and prevents binding of a piston which is always fixed in a normal state and required to move only in case of a failure of a hydraulic or pneumatic system. One end of a second piston (2) has a tubular extension. A first piston (1) is inserted in the tubular extension. The first piston (1) is acted upon by the hydraulic pressure introduced from a controlled pressure generating unit (9) into a first fluid chamber (3) and is kept in its initial position against a brake operating force transmitted from a brake pedal (7) through a first spring (5). The second piston (2) moves until the hydraulic pressure in the second fluid chamber (4) becomes substantially equal to the hydraulic pressure in the first fluid chamber (3). By the movement of the second piston (2), the sliding portions between the first and second pistons are frequently slid. This makes it possible to detect and prevent binding by comparing the hydraulic pressures in the first and second fluid chambers.

The invention relates to a hydraulic control unit for a motor vehicle braking system, comprising an electronic control unit (ECU), a pump (32) that delivers pressurised hydraulic fluid, supplying said hydraulic fluid to at least one braking device (22) coupled with a vehicle wheel, a first reservoir (34) for pressureless hydraulic fluid, and a second reservoir (36) for pressurised hydraulic fluid. The first reservoir is associated with the pump (32) on the input side and the second reservoir (36) is associated with the pump (32) on the output side. According to the invention, the pump (32), the first reservoir (34) and the second reservoir (36) are located in a joint housing (60) as an integrated electrohydraulic modular unit. This gives the inventive hydraulic control unit an advantageous shape and ensures that there are no critical problems related to installation space.
