A flame retardant resin composition which has high flame retardancy and excellent physical properties and comprises a resin obtained from a plant-derived raw material and a molded article thereof. The flame retardant resin composition comprises: (A) 100 parts by weight of a resin component (component A) which contains at least 50 wt% of a resin (component A-1) obtained from a plant-derived raw material; and (B) 1 to 100 parts by weight of an organic phosphorus compound (component B) represented by the following formula (1).

Improved flame retardant additives are formed from (A) at least one bis(alkanoic acid ester) of a ring-brominated aromatic diester diol; (B) liquid alkylated triphenyl phosphate having an approximate average formula (RxPhO)3P=O) in which each R is, independently, a hydrogen atom or a C14 alkyl group and x is an average number in the range of about 0.2 to 3; and (C) at least one alicyclic phosphonate ester having 1, 2 or 3 phosphorus atoms in the molecule, at least one of which is part of an alicyclic ring system, and having a phosphorus content of at least about 15 wt%. Combinations of these components are well- suited for use in various polymers or resins, especially polyurethanes.

A novel epoxy resin having reduced flammability is presented. Phosphonic acid esters in an amount of from 0.2 to 5 percent phosphorous in epoxy resin are employed. Electrical laminate circuit boards having reduced flammability may be made from these compositions.
