A closed loop control system for a electromagnetic clutch or brake (312) has a motor to provide force, a transducer (304) to read the force and produce an error signal, and an amplifier (311) to compare the error signal to a reference signal. The amplifier (311) will produce an output signal proportional to the input signal(s) and regulate the clutch or brake (312) accordingly. Additional transducers (305, 306) can be added so that torque, velocity and position can be considered. The signals from these transducers (304, 305, 306) can also be used to further condition and control output to the brake (312) or clutch.
