In a motor vehicle provided with an internal combustion engine having a system for variable actuation of the intake valves there is provided for a phase of activation of an operating mode with the engine off and the vehicle moving, in which the fuel supply to the engine is cut-off. After the cut-off of the fuel supply to the engine, the system for variable actuation of the intake valves is controlled to vary the opening time and/or closing time and/or the lift of the intake valves so as to control the losses due to the pumping effect which occur within the engine in cut-off condition. If the engine is equipped with starter capable of starting while engine moving, pumping losses are minimised to increase engine run down time. If the engine is equipped with starter capable of starting only engine at still stand, pumping loss are minimised as long as RPM is above threshold to allow restart by fuel supply and pumping losses are maximised when RPM is below threshold to reach quick stand still for restart by electric starter. This insures quick restart in case of driver change of mind in any case.

A unit (1, 1') for recovering and converting thermal energy from the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine (14) of a vehicle comprises a heat exchanger (2, 2') to be traversed by exhaust gases flowing along a by-pass path (5,5') branching out from an exhaust gas main line (4) of said internal combustion engine (14) and valve means (12) for controlling the flow of the exhaust gases through said path, said valve means (12) being driven by an actuator device (12A). The by-pass path (5, 5') is a U-shaped path defined entirely within the heat exchanger (2, 2'),starting from an inlet section (6, 6') and ending at an outlet section of the heat exchanger, the inlet and outlet sections (7,7') being located on a same side of the heat exchanger (2) and both opening on an interface conduit portion (3) interposed in said exhaust gas main line (4). The heat exchanger (2, 2') is arranged so that said U-shaped path is oriented transversely to the direction of the exhaust gas main line (4), in such a manner that the exhaust gases traversing the heat exchanger flow firstly in the transverse direction away from the exhaust gas main line (4) and then back in the transverse direction towards the exhaust gas main line (4), The valve means (12) are arranged within said interface conduit portion (3),between merging points of the inlet and outlet portions (6,7) of the heat exchanger (2,2').

In a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine, provided with a system for variable actuation of the intake valves of the engine, the hydraulic means and the solenoid valves for the variable actuation of the intake valves of the various cylinders are carried by independent support bodies (19A-D), part of independent sub-units (20A-D). The unit for variable actuation of the intake valves, constituted by the aforementioned sub-units (20A-D) is closed at the upper part by a cover (58) with the interposition of a sealing gasket (60). The sealing gasket has a main portion extending in a general plane for supporting the cover and respective portions (61A-D) associated to said sub-units (20A-D) projecting from said general plane, in positions arranged longitudinally adjacent to each other on one side of the cylinder head. Each of said portions (61A-D) has a three-dimensional development, with two lateral parts (62) contained in two planes substantially parallel to each other and orthogonal to said general plane and a central part (63) contained in a parallel plane and spaced from said base plane. The fuel injector associated to each engine cylinder is surrounded by a sealing casing which is part of a support body of the variable actuation means of the intake valves and which defines a sealing peripheral edge cooperating with the abovementioned sealing cover. The sealing peripheral edge of each injector casing is contained in a parallel plane and raised with respect to the general base plane of the abovementioned cover.

The magnet-holder member (4) can be displaced between an advanced, operative, position, in which the main magnet (M) is designed to grip and clamp a workpiece (L), and a retracted, inoperative, position. The movement of the magnet-holder member (M) is controlled by shape-memory actuator means (A1, A2, B, E).
