The present invention relates to an isolated polarization beam splitter or combiner, for joining light from different inputs into one common port, and for dividing a beam of light into orthogonal polarizations. In both modes of operation, the splitter/combiner provides isolation preventing transmission of light in a reverse direction. As a splitter, a beam of light is separated through a birefringent material into sub-beams of orthogonal polarization components, and each sub-beam is passed through a non-reciprocal polarization rotator to rotate the polarization so that a reflected beam, or other counter-transmitted light cannot return on the same path through the birefringent material to the source. As a combiner, two separate beams of light are launched with known orthogonal polarizations into a first birefringent material, passed through a non-reciprocal polarization rotator and then combined as orthogonal polarizations into a single output port. Advantageously, by providing the splitting or combining function in a same isolating device, insertion losses are reduced and the device is smaller and more cost effective. As a further advantage, a polarization beam splitter/combiner is provided in which the optical path length for the two separated orthogonal polarizations traveling through a birefringent crystal is equal, while still permitting the economical use of birefringent crystals with an uncollimated beam of light.

An optical switch is disclosed having 4-ports. The switch consists of a first GRIN lens having 2 ports (1 and 3) adjacent its outwardly facing end face, on opposite sides of an optical axis of the lens. A second GRIN lens is disposed to receive light from the first GRIN lens and has two ports (2 and 4) adjacent its outer end face, on opposite sides of an optical axis. In a first state, a first port (1) from the first GRIN lens couples light with port (2) of the second GRIN lens, and a second port (3) of the first GRIN lens simultaneously couples light with another port (4) of the second GRIN lens. A movable optical element, that when disposed in the path between first and second GRIN lens, provides only a single connection between a port of the first GRIN lens (1) and a port of the second GRIN lens (4) while preventing light from coupling between the other two ports (2 and 3). Hence a 1 ½ x 2 optical switch is disclosed. Furthermore, the optical switch is disclosed having multiple input and output ports. The switch consists of a first GRIN lens having 2 ports adjacent its outwardly facing end face. A second GRIN lens is disposed to receive light from the first GRIN lens and has two ports adjacent its outer end face. In a first state, a first port from the first GRIN lens couples light with a first output port of the second GRIN lens. In a second state, a movable optical element in the form of a light transmissive wedge having a reflective surface, is disposed in the path between first and second GRIN lens, providing a connection between a port of the first GRIN lens and a second port of the second GRIN lens. In a third connect state, the reflective surface of the wedge connects a port of the first GRIN lens and an output port in the same first GRIN lens. Hence an N x M optical switch is disclosed.

The present invention relates to an arrayed waveguide grating (102) having a reflective input that permits variable coupling to adjust the center wavelength. The present invention has found that by providing an arrayed waveguide grating (102) having one or more precisely positioned input waveguides (10,40) coupled through a reflective lens assembly (30,32), for providing a lateral offset to a signal propogating from the input waveguide (10,40) to the planar waveguide (12), and for focusing a reflected input signal at a selected input point of the input planar waveguide (12), alignment and tuning of an input and assembly can be improved and simplified. Advantageously, variable coupling parameters can be incorporated into the reflective coupling including input position, waveguide taper (42) and planar waveguide length increment (44) to provide relatively simple tuning in an integrated device. Compensation for polarization effects and thermal effects can also be provided in the reflective coupling.

An optical device for rerouting and modifying an optical signal that is capable of operating as a dynamic gain equalizer (DGE) and/or a configurable optical add/drop multiplexer (COADM) is disclosed. The optical design includes a front-end unit for providing a collimated beam of light, an element having optical power for providing collimating/focusing effects, a diffraction element for providing spatial dispersion, and modifying means which in a preferred embodiment includes one of a MEMS array and a liquid crystal array for reflecting and modifying at least a portion of a beam of light. The modifying means functions as an attenuator when the optical device operates as a DGE and as a switching array when the optical device operates as a COADM. Advantageously, this invention provides a 4-f system wherein a preferred embodiment the element having optical power is a concave reflector for providing a single means for receiving light from the front-end unit, reflecting the received light to the dispersive element, receiving light from the dispersive element, and providing dispersed light to the modifying means. Conveniently and advantageously, this same concave reflector is utilized on a return path, obviating the requirement of matching elements. In one embodiment a single focussing/collimating lens is provided substantially at a focal plane of the element having optical power.

A three-stage optical amplifier is disclosed having a first pre-amplifying stage for receiving an optical signal to be amplified and having a length of erbium doped fibre and a pump for providing energy to the erbium doped fibre. A second-stage is optically coupled to receive the optical signal from the first-stage after the optical signal has been pre-amplified. The second-stage a Raman amplifier has a length of standard or DCF optical fibre and a Raman pump for providing energy to the length of optical fibre for further amplifying the pre-amplified signal propagating therethrough and for controlling tilt of the amplified signal. A third stage EDFA for further amplifying the signal amplified by the Raman amplifier. Conveniently, the Raman stage is useful for both amplifying and providing tilt control.

A micro-optical delay element for a polarization time-division multiplexing scheme is disclosed wherein two light beams are provided to a polarization beam splitter/combiner (PBS/C) in the absence of optical fibre. At least one beam exiting a modulator is collimated and reaches the (PBS/C) unguided as a substantially collimated beam. In this manner the polarization state of the beam is substantially unchanged. This obviates a requirement for polarization controllers.
