A method is provided for producing elastic composite laminates. The laminates contain elastic filaments that are stretched and laminated to at least one facing material. The continuous filaments are laminated to the facing material using a starved slot coat process. The starved slot coat process provides various benefits and advantages including the production of laminates having improved properties.

A method of making an elastic laminate (10) includes the steps of feeding a first substrate (16) in a machine direction, feeding a second substrate (18) aligned with the first substrate in the machine direction, and feeding an array of elastomeric strand material (14) stretched in the machine direction between the first and second substrates. A hot melt adhesive is applied onto the strand material, and a curable adhesive is applied to one or both of the substrates. The two substrates and the elastomeric strand material are then compressed to form an elastomeric preform web (2) while maintaining the elastomeric strand material in its stretched state. The stretched elastomeric preform web is then heated in line by feeding it over heated rolls (42, 44, 46), and thereafter allowed to relax and contract in the machine direction as it cools and moves downstream from the heated rolls to form a gathered elastomeric laminate (8). A release liner (4) is fed in the machine direction and aligned with the gathered elastomeric laminate, and a pressure sensitive adhesive (6) is applied to the release liner. The gathered elastomeric laminate and release liner are then compressed to form the elastic laminate which is particularly useful ans window flashing.

A method for forming ferroelectric wafers (10) is provided. A prestress layer (14) is placed on the desired mold. A ferroelectric wafer (12) is placed on top of the prestress layer. The layers are heated and then cooled, causing the ferroelectric wafer to become prestressed. The prestress layer may include reinforcing material and the ferroelectric wafer may include electrodes or electrode layers may be placed on either side of the ferroelectric layer. Wafers produced using this method have greatly improved output motion.

A superconducting ceramic (10) includes a superconducting ceramic tape (12) joined to laminates (14, 16). The superconducting ceramic tape (12) may be joined to each laminate (14, 16) by solder (13, 15) or epoxy, or by solderless mechanical bonding techniques. The laminates (14, 16) and superconducting ceramic tape (12) are joined such that the tape (12) is under a compressive stress. The compressive stress is of a greater amount than the compressive stress which results from differences in thermal expansion of the tape and the laminate. The greater compressive stress can be achieved by putting the laminate under a greater tension than the superconducting ceramic tape during joining of the superconducting ceramic tape to the laminate. The superconducting ceramic may include only one laminate joined to the superconducting ceramic tape.

Disclosed herein is an efficient, in-line process for forming elastic laminates comprising an elastic blown film sheet and one or more fibrous nonwoven webs. The process is capable of making elastic laminates having the properties of stretch and recovery in the machine direction, in the cross machine direction, or in both the machine direction and cross machine direction. The elastic laminates produced may be bilayer or trilayer laminates. Such elastic laminates are highly useful for use in personal care products, protective wear garments, medical care products, mortuary and veterinary products and the like.

An elastic laminate web is disclosed. The elastic laminate web can be non-apertured or apertured, and comprises a first web, and a second web joined to the first web in a face to face relationship at a plurality of discrete bond sites having an aspect ratio of at least 2. The first and second webs form an interior region therebetween. An elastic material is disposed between the first and second webs. The elastic material is apertured in regions coincident the bond sites, such that the first and second webs are joined through the apertures. The laminate so produced can be stretched in a predetermined direction, such as by incremental stretching, to produce an apertured elastic laminate.
