Preferred aspects of the present invention relate to advances in rotating, vortex-enhanced reverse osmosis filtration. More particularly, the filtration device and methods incorporate a rotational drive mechanism adapted to use the flow of pressurized process fluid to cause rotation of a rotor within a housing, thereby creating shear and Taylor vortices in the gap between the rotor and housing. The improvements disclosed herein facilitate continuous use of vortex-enhanced filtration for prolonged periods of time.

By using the above agent, an increased rejection of inorganic electrolytes and organic compounds soluble in water can be maintained for a long time easily and safely at the location of the use of the membrane without extreme decrease in the flux of permeation in the membrane separation using a selective permeable membrane such as a nano filtration membrane and a reverse osmosis membrane.

The disclosed invention is an improved method for treating ethanol distillery discharge by recovering, through pressurized membrane filtration, pure water from still bottoms for human consumption and concentrating the solids before anaerobic fermentation. The invention is an improved process because it retains the heat to operate at high temperatures and recovers the water from the fermentation still bottoms while pasteurized in a sanitary manner and simultaneously concentrates the solids for digestion in a completely stirred tank reactor at thermophilic temperatures. The reactor produces a gas rich in methane fuel to power the pressurized filtration process, produces a reduced volume of reactor waste to manage, and an aqueous ammonia solution to recycle to the process. This invention improves environmental quality, conserve energy and produces a beverage of reliable source and quality.

A method for the treatment and filtration of fluids, i.e. liquid effluents such as raw water containing organic pollutants in a solution, using gravity separation means (10) such as a decantation and flotation means, and membrane separation means (13) in a finishing stage, wherein a first pulverulent reagent (1) is introduced into the flow of a fluid to be treated upstream from gravity separation, and a second pulverulent reagent (2) is introduced downstream from the membrane separation. The inventive method is characterized in that the coagulant required for separation is injected before the first pulverulent reagent; in that the first and second pulverulent reagents (1,2) have different characteristics, i.e. in terms of granulometry, adsorption capacity adapted to the pollutants which are to be eliminated; and in that the second pulverulent reagent (2) is recycled from membrane separation means (13) upstream from the gravity separation means (10).

The present invention relates to a method of reducing the total organic carbon (TOC) content of waste water in the course of the preparation of concentrated solutions or suspensions of anionic organic compounds, which method comprises increasing the concentration of an aqueous solution or suspension of an anionic organic compound in the form of its free acid or its alkali metal salt, having a salt content of less than 5% of extraneous salt by weight based on the total solution or suspension, by microfiltration, ultrafiltration and/or nanofiltration, a) the membrane pore size being so selected that compounds having molecular weights in the range from 300 to 1000 Daltons or higher are retained, and b) the content of anionic compound in the concentrate being so adjusted to from 10 to 50% by weight that the total organic carbon (TOC) content of the permeate is less than 0.5% by weight, based on the total permeate, and c) optionally, after increasing the concentration of a suspension, dissolving the anionic organic compound by adding a suitable base. The invention relates also to the solutions and suspensions prepared by that means and to the use of such solutions or suspensions in dyeing or optically whitening paper or textile materials.
