Disclosed are dry set mortar compositions having improved non-sag properties, while retaining properties such as workability, adhesion and long open time. In particular, these properties are achieved by the use of finely divided silica, such as fumed or precipitated silica, as an anti-sag agent in combination with certain carbohydrate polymers, as water retention agents such as cellulose ethers or mixtures thereof with natural gums, such as the polygalactomannan gums. The mortar composition is also comprised of the usual Portland cement and an inert filler such as sand and may also contain latex binders found in many conventional mortar compositions.

A method of cementing a conduit in a borehole penetrating an earthen formation, by introducing a salt-tolerant cementing composition into the space between said conduit and said formation, wherein the cementing composition comprises cement and: (a) water containing in excess of about 10% salt by weight of the water, and (b) a fluid loss additive comprising an admixture of: (i) at least one member selected from carboxymethylhydroxyethylcellulose and copolymers or copolymer salts of N,N-dimethylacrylamide and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid or acid salts thereof, having a mole ratio from about 1:4 to about 4:1 and a molecular weight such that a 0.1% aqueous solution of said copolymer has a Brookfield viscosity reading at 5 rpm of the U.L. Adapter Spindle in the range of about 30 to about 250 centipoise (.03 to .25 Pa s). present in an amount of from about 0.1% to about 1.0% by weight of dry cement; and (ii) a copolymer or copolymer salt of acrylic acid and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid or acid salt thereof, having a mole ratio of from about 1:5to about 5:1 and a molecular weight such that a 10% aqueous solution of said copolymer has a Brookfield viscosity reading at 20 rpm of the U.L. Adapter Spindle in the range of about 5 to about 50 centipoise (.005 to .05 Pa s), present in an amount of from about 0.1% to about 3.0% by weight of dry cement.

A salt water hydraulic cement slurry and method of use in oil and gas well cement jobs involving a novel fluid loss additive comprising an admixture of sulfonated aromatic polymers. An effective amount of an admixture of water soluble salts of a sulfonated styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer, sulfonated polystyrene, sulfonated polyvinyltoluene and sulfonated polynaphthalene/formaldehyde condensate when added to a salt water/Portland cement slurry provides fluid loss control to the Portland cement slurry at bottomhole circulating temperature between 80° and 210°F. Further, addition of and/or the replacement of the sulfonated polystyrene by a water soluble lignosulfonate further enhances the high tempeature properties of the salt water cement slurry. One exception to this appears in British patent 2,080,812 which describes the use of very low molecular weight carboxymethylhydroxyethylcellulose polymers in combination with hydroxycarboxy acids as fluid loss additives for salt water cement slurries.

A method of conversion of a water-based mud to a gel-based LCM quickly to control lost circulation in a lost circulation zone in a wellbore during continuous drilling with a drilling mud, the drilling mud comprises a volcanic ash, water, a de-foamer, a pH buffer, and a polymer. The method comprises the steps of entering the lost circulation zone, determining a lost circulation volumetric flow rate, metering a first amount of a binder into the drilling mud to create a binder containing mud, pumping the binder containing drilling mud into the wellbore, and suspending metering of the first amount of the binder to the drilling mud after a pre-defined regulating period of time effective to permit the binder containing drilling mud to create a gel-based LCM operable to alter the lost circulation zone.

A cement composition for use in well cementing may include hydraulic cement and natural glass having a median particle size (d50) of less than 12 microns and a top particle size (dm) of less than 30 microns.
