    摘要: A patient care system comprising an interface unit, a Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) unit, and a pulse oximetry unit is disclosed. The PCA unit provides PCA administration, including administration of a dose of analgesic upon request, and the pulse oximetry unit provides constant monitoring of the patient's blood oxygen saturation level and pulse rate. The interface unit provides for communication between and control of the PCA unit and the pulse oximetry unit, and further provides an interface between the user and the system. When the pulse oximetry unit indicates to the interface unit that the patient's blood oxygen saturation level and pulse rate has reached a user-specified minimum, the interface unit initiates visual and audio alarms and controls the PCA unit by shutting off the PCA unit. The interface unit also contains communication ports, which the interface unit can use to send signals to external devices, such as to alert alerts medical personnel.

    摘要: A capacitive-based apparatus (10) for measuring the volume of a fluid drop (30) passing through an intravenous drip chamber (12). The apparatus includes a capacitor (16) comprising two parallel plates (42) that are a fixed distance apart and are positioned such that the fluid flow path in the drip chamber is between them. The fluid drop moving through the drip chamber between the plates causes the capacitance of the plates to change. This change in capacitance is measured and from it, the volume of the drop is calculated. The volumes of a series of drops are integrated to provide a measured rate of flow through the drip chamber. This measured rate of flow is compared to the programmed rate of flow and the difference is used to adjust a flow control device to obtain the desired rate of flow.

    摘要: A valve mechanism (16, 24, 26, 44) for a needleless connector employs a deformable piston (44) having a piston head (24) of elliptical cross-section with a marquise-shaped bore formed along its longitudinal axis wherein the major axes of the respective generally elliptical shapes are oriented perpendicular to one another. The piston head (24) is captured within the connector housing (16, 14) and is reciprocable between a section of reduced diameter adjacent the connection port and a section (33) of enlarged diameter. Constraining the piston head (24) into the section of reduced diameter causes the elliptical bore to be squeezed shut while positioning the piston head (24) in the section (33) of enlarged diameter causes the piston head to relax and assume its natural elliptical shape, while the bore similarly regains its natural open shape to provide a fluid path therethrough. A compressible or extendible section (48) affixed to the piston head (24) serves to bias the piston into the section of reduced diameter. A tapered section (56) of the piston contacts the housing to keep the top of the piston flush with the top of the housing for ease of cleaning.

    摘要: An interface device secures an instrument to a docking station having a casing having at least one signal port and a mounting rail mounted within a recessed portion of the casing. The signal ports may be power or data communications ports. A back panel forms part of an instrument housing for housing the instrument, a first portion protrudes rearward from the back panel and a first recess is carried by the protruding portion. The first recess is dimensioned to receive the mounting rail. A rail cam is rotatably mounted within the protruding portion and is aligned with the first recess to receive and retain the mounting rail and at least one first-portion signal port carried by the first portion. The first portion is dimensioned to fit within the recessed portion of the casing such that the rail cam is positioned to receive the mounting rail and the at least one first-portion signal port is aligned, in a complementary fashion, with the at least one casing signal port. A pole clamp assembly may be positioned near the first and second portions. A pivot member is moveable between a retracted position and an extended position and a post having an axis. The post is mounted to the pivot member for axial movement and mounted thereto such that when the pivot member is retracted the axis of the post is substantially parallel with the back panel and when the pivot member is extended the axis of the post is substantially perpendicular to the back panel.
